"Rue", I whispered into the darkness. "Pst, Rue, are you awake?" I heared a yawn and Rue answered quietly "Now I am. What is it, Prim? I'm tired!" "Do you know, how Finnick's doing? I heard, they went hard on him today." "No I don't, we may be able to see him at breakfast." I wasn't so sure about that. I didn't know exactly, what they did to him all the time, probably something, that I didn't want to know but he and his station often weren't able to leave their station. I had to look after him. "I'm going to sneak out of our station. Just to look, if he's okay or if I can help him in any way. Are you coming with me?", I asked Rue. "Prim, we are about to leave in the next few weeks, if we get into trouble, they are going to keep us! You can't just risk everything we built up over the last couple of months.", she said. I groaned. "Come on, Finnick is our friend, we have to check on him. And since when do you care about rules? You were the rebel on this station, what happened?" Rue seemed to get a bit angry. "Yeah, but that was before they told us that we might actually be able to life our lifes again, once we're of age. And before we ruined everything with one stupid prank and had to stay another eternity and got extra treatment."
"Can't you two stop talking? Others are trying to sleep!", someone hushed from another bed across the station. "Fine, you don't have to come. You stay here and rest, I'm checking on Finnick.", I sayed. Rue sighted. "Sure, because I'm going to let you go without me." I swung myself out of bed, grabbed the bag with my infusion and pulled away the curtain between our beds. Rue and I walked across the hallway, trying to make as few sounds as possible. "I swear to god, if we're getting into trouble for this, I'm going to kill you, Everdeen.", she hissed. We pushed the big metal door open, sneaked through the next station and almost got caught by a night guard, but were able to hide behind a medicine cabinet real quick.
After we reached the hallway where Finnick was stationed, we didnt look left or right and just went straight to where he was lying. "Where are you going?", I suddenly heared a voice. We slowly turned around, just to see Clove sitting in her bed, staring at us. "My God, you scared us.", Rue exclaimed. "Really? I scare you? Are you sure, you're 20?", she laughed quietly. Rue blushed, I could even see it through the darkness. "If you don't think you're scary as hell, you clearly never went into the hunger games with yourself as opponent.", she said. "True. But don't worry, Gnome. I won't try to kill you again. Are you here to see Finnick? He's really not doing that well, I don't think, it's a good idea." "Don't worry, we're just here to try and help him. You won't snitch us out, will you?", I asked. "Have I ever? We have to stick together, right? I won't ruin your chances of finally leaving this place behind, don't worry."
I smiled at her. When I first met Clove, I hated her. I mean, I only knew her as the person, who tried to kill Katniss multiple times. But I quickly learned two things. For one, the careers were just scared children. They were nothing more then a piece in the games. And for two, if you want to stay alive in this building of hell, you have to stick together, wether you like it or not. Rue pulled away the yellow curtain around Finnicks bed and I saw him, throwing himself around in his sleep, sweating and mumbling the name of his wife, Annie. We all got nightmares, but some people-like Finnick-a lot more then others. I put my Infusion on his nightstand and try to wake him up. I grabbed him by his shoulders and started to shake him softly, before he finally opened his eyes.
"Sch, it's just us. How are you doing?", Rue asked. I glared at her. Wasn't it obvious, that he wasn't absolutly thrilled of the situation. "Annie. I need to get to her. I need to check, if she's okay. I need to find her. Annie!", he said, almost like in trance and I was scared, someone of the night guards would hear us, but noone came. I hugged him and whispered: "It's okay, Finn. She's fine. Annie's safe. You don't have to worry about her. It's okay. I'm here for you." I kept hugging him and felt, how he slowly relaxed in my arms, though tears still ran across his face. In moments like this, no one would think that this was a thirty year old men. We all had to make our sacrifices, but Finnick was even more damaged because of what they did to us. I knew how much he cared about Annie, I already saw it when she was captured by the capitol or when they were finally reunited and got married. If anyone ever saw them together, they'd understand why Finnick still missed her, even though it's been more then six years.
It seemed as if he finally snapped out of his trance, when he said: "You shouldn't have come. You're so close to living again, you shouldn't risk it for me. You don't have to come and see me so often." "Of course we have to. You're our friend.", Rue answered for both of us. "I know, it's ridiculous, how I act. But I just wish, I'd know, if she's okay. Or at least, if the rebellion won in Panem." I knew, how he felt. Since I was captured and brought in this hospital-bunker-i don't know what outside of Panem I didn't hear anything from the situation there. We all missed our loved once and wanted to hear from them.
"You know what? When Rue and I leave, we're going to do everything we can, to contact Annie. We're going to make sure she's okay for you. And we're going to tell her, that you're alive and miss her. And if we have the chance, we're going to let you know about it.", I said. "You'd do that for me?" "Of course, you idiot. We're going to make sure, everything's alright. I promise."
