Niyati pov

Looking at stars in the sky, I lay still.
Not wanting to remember things, but when does anything happen the way I wish.
I plunge into my own memories, my memories of my childhood.

“Pitashree, Arjun is troubling me! Tell him to go away!” I say.
But my pitashree just chuckles.
“Pitashree!” I whine, but he still doesn't do anything to stop Arjun from pulling my hair.
“Bheem!”
As soon as I shout Bheem's name, Arjun runs away.
“Where are you going now bhratashree?” saying this, I run behind him.
But unfortunately I missed from catching him because of my clothes.
I go and sit back where I was.
Five minutes later, I see Bheem twisting Arjun's ear and dragging him to me.
I laugh while Arjun glares at me.
“I knew Bheem would help me. I love you Bheem!” Bheem smiles.
“I love you too behen. But tell me, what should we do to this troublemaker now?”
“Let us not give him food” I suggest.
“Hmm, now that sounds like a punishment.”
“It's not a punishment Bhrata, it's my life now. No matter what, I still don't get food because you take it all.” Arjun says bluntly.
I laugh when I see Bheem hit Arjun.
“Arre arre Bheem, let him be now.”
“Putri, can you come and help me?” Mata Kunti calls me.
“Ji mata,” I respond, before turning back to my twin and younger brother. “Bheem, don't steal his food from now on. He has become so weak. And Arjun, if you trouble me more, I will see that you really get punished.”
I hear him mimick me. I roll my eyes.
I go to Mata and help her cook food.
“Mata, pitashree never helps me. Arjun, Nakul and Sahadev trouble me and he just sits there laughing. Bhrata Yudhishthir too. Only Bheem helps me.” I complained.
I hear her laughing too.
“Mata, not you too! Why does everyone laugh at what I say?”
“Because it's not your brothers that trouble you, it's you and your partner in crime Bheem who troubles them.”
“But I can trouble them, I'm elder.”
Mata Kunti shakes her head.
“What can I even say?”
“Nothing Mata” I say laughing.

It was night. I was sitting besides my pitashree, my head on his shoulder.
“Putri, why don't you go and sleep?”
“I don't know pitashree but I'm not feeling good. It feels like something is going to happen. Something bad. I'm scared that if I fall asleep, I won't be able to stop it.”
“Why do you have to stop it putri?”
“I'm their elder sister pitashree. I have to protect them. Although I'm not the jyesth, I feel like it's my responsibility.”

“Perhaps because it is putri. But putri, I'm here na, so why do you need to be so uptight. You don't look good like this. I prefer the playful and sunshine side of yours. The one who smiles no matter what happens.”
I smile against his shoulder.

“Are you saying that I should go and trouble my brothers pitashree?”
He laughs.
“No no, don't disturb them now, they're asleep. What I mean to say is that go and sleep. Don't worry about anything. I'm here. Mata Kunti and Mata Madri are also here.”
“But-”
“Go”
“Goodnight pitashree.”
“Goodnight sweetheart.”

Little did know, that what I was feeling was going to be true. Little did I know, that was my last goodnight to him.

“ARYA! ARYA WAKE UP!”
My eyes open and go towards the voice of Mata Kunti to see her bawling her eyes out.
I shift my eyes where she was seeing and my heart stops.
There laid my pitashree and Mata Madri.
“No no no no no no no, pitashree! Wake up! Mata, why is pitashree not waking up? Wake him up Mata! Pitashree!” I sob.
Soon, all my brothers come near us and saw what happened.
Bheem put his arm around my shoulder and I cry into his chest.

“I told him I felt that something was wrong. I knew something was goign to happen. I could have stopped it Bheem, why did I have to go to sleep?”

Stop crying priye. Be strong.

I'm so confused that I'm hearing voices now.
But then I heard.
I heard Mata Kunti and my brother's cries.

You have to stop Niyati, I tell myself, pulling myself away from Bheem's arms and wiping my tears.

I will not anything happen to my family. Never Pitashree and Mata Madri. I promise you.

                         ***

I've kept my promise Pitashree.
But I'm not able to smile and be playful the way you like seeing me.
Not anymore atleast.

Niyati is the second oldest in the Pandavas. Her and Bheem are twins, her being older than Bheem.
