Two Weeks Later

Madeleine shook her eldest daughter awake. "Sweetheart, it's time to go."

Evelyn rubbed her eyes and yawned. "I'm hungry, Mama."

"You have buttered toast on the table, but I'd like you to put your shoes on first."

Evelyn's eyes widened. "You found butter?"

"Only a little, and I've used it up."

She jumped up and ran to find her shoes. "Did Becca eat breakfast? Did you?"

"Yes, both Becca and I have eaten."

"Can I sleep on the train?"

"That sounds like a wonderful idea."

"Okay, I'll sleep on the train. Will we see Papa at the camp?"

"I don't think so. We're going to a training camp, so I doubt we'll see Papa."

"Oh. Okay."

Evelyn slipped her shoes on and grabbed her buttered toast.

The three left the apartment and Madeleine locked the door behind them.

Rebecca waved to the door and said, "Bye-bye."

Madeleine chuckled softly. "That's right, Becca. Bye-bye, house."

US TRAINING CAMP

An officer said to other soldiers training, "Ready, exercise!"

"Recruits, attention!" Peggy Carter ordered. "Gentlemen, I'm Agent Carter. I supervise all operations for this division." She gestured to Madeleine, who stood next to her. "This is Agent Barnes."

"What's with the accent, Queen Victoria?" Gilmore Hodge asked. "Thought I was signing up for the U.S. Army." He smiled at Madeleine. "Shouldn't you be on the Homefront with your little girls?"

An irritated look crossed Madeleine's face. "I'm serving my country just as you are, soldier. You don't like it, you can go home."

"What's your name, soldier?" Peggy asked, smirking lightly at Madeleine's comment.

"Gilmore Hodge, your Majesty," Hodge said.

"Step forward, Hodge." He stepped forward, smirking. "Put your right foot forward."

"Mmm... We gonna wrassle? 'Cause I got a few moves I know you'll both like."

Peggy punched him, knocking him down.

Colonel Phillips drove up and called, "Agent Carter. Agent Barnes."

"Colonel Phillips," Peggy and Madeleine said.

"I see you're breaking in the candidates. That's good!" He turned to Hodge. "Get your ass up out of that dirt and stand in that line at attention 'til somebody comes tells you what to do."

Hodge got back up. "Yes, sir."

Colonel Phillips addressed the new Army recruits. "General Patton has said that wars are fought with weapons but they are won by men. We are going to win this war because we have the best men..." He saw Steve and continued. "And because they're gonna get better. Much better. The Strategic Scientific Reserve is an Allied effort made up of the best minds in the free world. Our goal is to create the best army in history. But every army starts with one man. At the end of this week we will choose that man. He will be the first in a new breed of super-soldiers."

While Phillips spoke, Steve unpacked and trained where he failed to keep up and got bullied by the others.

"Rogers!" Sergeant Duffy called. "Get that rifle out of the mud!"
