“Kellin, what in the world is this absurdity?”
Every word in that sole sentence made everything in me and around me stop as if someone pulled a huge switch that controls everything. I stared at my mother with wide eyes, not knowing what to say. Although I was aware that my dad was standing beside her, I didn’t dare to look at his direction. I kind of knew what his entire expression held which is somewhere between disappointed, confusion, anger and disgust or all of those mixed together, you decide.
“Kellin, what is the meaning of this?” My mom once again spoke, her words were sharp and held nothing but sternness. I didn’t know what to say. I mean, what was I supposed to say? ‘Hey yeah, I’ve been running and fooling around with this guy right here oh and, we might run off in a field of flowers with little colorful butterflies while holding hands.’ I took a huge gulp of whatever it was that had been blocking my throat, not letting anything slip from my mouth. See, I’ve been dreading this day. I knew I had to tell them sooner or later but I still wasn’t sure! Everything was happening in such a blur and I just haven’t fully decided on what I should be doing next.
“It’s I-I..” I didn’t know what they were expecting from me. What was I supposed to say?
“I really like your son, ma’am and we’re just-“
“We are not talking to you!” My mother was furious now as she diverted her piercing eyes to Vic’s direction, making me flinch a little. “I’ve heard a lot of things about you, Victor and we truly do not appreciate the way that you’ve been poisoning our son’s mind!”
“M-Mom, stop. This isn’t his fault, okay? Just-just put him out of this.” I shakily answered for Vic. Never have I ever answered back to my parents and I never knew that I would be doing it because they obviously can’t understand that a person is capable of developing strong and deep feelings towards another person of the same gender.
“We’re so disappointed, Kellin. I thought we did well in raising you to become and normal and decent individual. I’ve never thought that you would grow up to be like- like this.” My dad finally spoke, breaking down his own barriers of solitary confinement.
“I am normal!” I shouted, feeling my blood rush up to my ears. “I am decent and I am still me, what the hell are you even trying to say?!”
“This! We did not raise you to be someone who’s talking to his parents in such a disgraceful manner.” My mother once again butted-in, her own cheeks tainted with a blush of red, probably from pure anger or whatever.
“I just learned how to stand on my own and how to defend myself, mom. I am still the same Kellin that you raised!” I said, not even bothering to change my tone. My parents looked offended but really, I didn’t care.
“I-I think this city caused you too much.” My mom finally changed her tone, sadness and disappointment lurking in her quivering voice. I just stared at her with my eyebrows knitted together. I glanced at Vic’s direction and he just mirrored the expression that was sprawled across my heated face. “You’re going back with us. Tomorrow.” If my world just stopped revolving a while back, I think the world suddenly dropped in a furiously fast pace as the words left her lips. My stomach felt like it managed to tie itself into a big, tight knot.
“You can’t do that! I-I’m not going with you!” I said, shaking my head in disbelief. Are they insane?! They can’t just keep on deciding things for me!
“Kellin, we’ve decided and we genuinely think that it’s the best-“
“No! You don’t know what’s best for me! All you know is how to ruin my life and how to keep on stepping over every single decision that I’ve made!” I was so furious and I felt Vic step closer to me, holding my hand in a comforting way. I would like to convince myself that it helped but really, it didn’t. Although I appreciated the gesture, I was just too fired up because of my parents and I couldn’t be bothered by anything or anyone right there.
