I can feel Vivian's eyes on me.

I need to change the subject so that she doesn't try to pry out the reasons I mentioned.

I turn on my side to meet her eyes.

The moon is unusually bright today and it very beautifully illuminates the features of the girl whose face expresses deep thoughtfulness.

It seems like she is looking at me, but she doesn't see me.

We are lying at a fairly close distance from each other - I can easily reach her with my hand.

She doesn't move when I get a little closer and tuck a stray strand of hair behind her little ear.
Then I gently outline it with my fingertips, lingering a little on the lobe.

Some unknown force is pulling me closer and closer.

In the dark by the light of the moon, I seem to completely lose the ability to think sensibly, but the last thing I want right now is to analyze: there is only Vivian and me - the night hides us from prying eyes, from unsolicited judgments.

I'm so close that I can already feel her breathing.

If she didn't like something, she would have made it clear long ago, right?

I gently press my lips to Vivian's, touching the side of her face as if she was made of the finest porcelain.

At this moment, as though from somewhere in the depths, a barely audible voice is heard.

"Aiden! Aiden, are you all right?" Vivian waves her palm in front of me.

I blink a few times to recover.

Damn.

So all this was just a figment of my imagination?

"You stared ahead of you for a long time without blinking. I was afraid something was wrong," the girl worriedly admits.

"No, no, it's fine. It happens sometimes," I try to calm her down. "Have you already figured out what you're going to do next weekend?"

A distraction that will give me a little time to get back into reality.

"To be honest, I didn't think about it at all," Vivian smiles. "I always have books so as not to get bored. I have a lot to learn."

Just then, the bulbs on the trees light up, blinding us with their brightness.

"Looks like the power's back on," I state the obvious fact.

Vivian, as if enchanted, rises leaning on her elbow and looking up at the decorated crown of trees.

"I told Grace she has no sense of restraint when it comes to making food and decor", I can't help but comment.

"No, no, it turned out very nicely. Are we going to watch a movie now?"

I completely forgot about what she asked for.

I can't spend another minute with her, I feel like I'm losing my mind in her presence.

"To tell you the truth, I would have gone to bed by now. Guess, football has exhausted me so much," I come up with an excuse.

I'm a complete fool, pathetic really, because I know perfectly well I will still come when Vivian falls asleep - to play a hero, warding off her nightmares, again.
