The walk home had been in silence for the first two blocks and it was only when Emmy, who had spent this time walking around dazedly, decided she was going to walk on the old church wall, that the silence was broken. The wall was pretty high and rickety, at least a metre of the ground and with concrete either side. She stepped up and held her two arms out to the sides like a tightrope artist. Her bag was still being held by Miles in his left hand while his own rucksack was on his back.
"Get down from there, now." His voice came from no where and shocked her into loosing her balance for a second before regaining it.
"I'm fine, I did gymnastics when I was younger I can walk on a wall without falling." It was at that very moment that the earth began to shake and she finally lost her balance. She closed her eyes and covered her face with her hands and waited to hit the hard, cold floor. It took a couple seconds for her to register that she hadn't hit the floor, not entirely, she was being supported at the shoulders, a hand behind her head.
The shaking stopped and she opened her eyes. Starting straight back at her was Miles' warm brown ones.
"I told you, you'd fall." Broken from her trance she stood up, realising her head was extremely close to the sharp jutting edge of the wall.
"Thank you, Miles" She received a tight lipped smile in return before he started to walk again, picking up her bag from where he dropped it and leaving her walking two paces behind him. His legs were far too long for her.
Tired of this continual silence, a bored look in her eyes was replaced with a curious one.
"That was my first ever earthquake." This only earned her a slight glance so she continued. "We learnt in geography that earthquakes are caused by the shifting of tectonic plates colliding, I always forget the proper name."
"Convergent plate boundaries"
"Yeah that's it. What is it they say about earthquakes what you should remember to do after? Who knows maybe a cup of tea will help me remember?" Miles was about to reply that it was unlikely that tea had memory restorative properties when an aftershock hit.
Unprepared for the sudden movement, the ground cracking in front of them, Emmy fell again. She gripped tightly to Miles' blue hoodie and kept hold until the shakes stopped.
"Aftershocks, that was what I was trying to remember, you should be prepared for aftershocks."
"You can let go now. You're stretching my hoodie."
"Oh, I'm sorry." She replied backing away again in haste carefully avoiding the cracks in the road. Turning around quickly she started walking up the road knowing her parents would now be worried and since she was only a block away it was better than texting.
"Thanks for walking me this far Miles, and catching me, I can go alone from here. Your parents are probably worried.""They won't be. Besides if I don't walk you home the rocks might kill you." A light smile twitched on his lips, causing a massive grin to unfold on hers.
"Wouldn't want death by stupid rocks now would we."
The rest of the journey was spent discussing geological features and their ranking of deadliness, stupid rocks receiving a ranking of 7, while god farts received an 8: she was not looking forward to experiencing those.
It was only five minutes later when they arrived at her house."Do you want to come in?"
"Sure." He followed her through the front door, admiring the large but bare entrance. Emmy yelled for her parents but received no reply, choosing then to text them that she was okay.
"I guess they're not home. Don't mind the barrenness of the house, all our stuff arrives tomorrow. Wanna come up to my room?" Before waiting for an answer she started walking up the stairs, this time she left him in the dust.
"Are you sure I should be in your room?" He yelled after her but followed when he didn't receive a reply. Thinking to himself what's the worst that could happen, before another pain erupted in his skull.
