Good Lord, what is that blasted beeping.
"Shut up" Emmy groans

Miles was sat in a blue hard-backed plastic chair, surrounded by the chemical smell of the sanitation equipment used by the hospital staff. His teeth were clenched as he pinched his fingers together, leaving imprints of his nails in his pail skin. Thoughts ran through his head, mostly of why he wasn't there earlier. He told her not to go out, it's her fault. He pinched his fingers harder. He should have known she wouldn't listen. He kept running it through his head, how his vision had initially just shown her at gun point, but how he had managed to see further with his newfound control that it was outside 711 with a street sign for Housley road. He had been convinced the vision wouldn't occur after he told her not to leave the house, wouldn't the earthquake be enough to stop her from going out in the dark alone? Evidently not.
He could still see her body crumpled on the floor, submerged in the shadows of the street. Her hair had partly fallen out of her ponytail and her fists curled like she had had them clenched, she was probably terrified.
Why? Why did he start getting unprompted visions again, why her?

"Excuse me, hun." He had been so trapped in his own world that he had failed to notice the nurse standing in front of him. "She's awake, and her family has said you can come and see her."
"Thank you," he grabbed his jacket which he had left on the chair next to him and started walking to where he knew her room to be. It took all his self control not to rush and run through the halls, but he knew running was against hospital policy.

Emmy felt like death. She managed to pry her eyes open, her body battling with her that it needed more sleep, but she didn't want to go back to sleep. Her parents were sat in chairs either side of her bed, her mum holding her hand. She remembered everything. It played through her head in slow motion, questioning anything she could have done to change the situation she had found herself in? Could she have paid by card not cash, worn her running shoes, taking the opposite road, crossed the road, not gone out at all? There was nothing she could do now, but she had a nagging feeling this was avoidable somehow.
Her parents chose that moment to notice her eyes were open.
"Emmy, hunny. You're awake. Don't sit up to fast." Her mother helped her push the pillows up behind her back and with her body still fighting every movement. She struggled into an upright position.
"Hunny." This time it was her dad who spoke. "You blacked out again. The doctors aren't sure why other than anxiety, so they want to keep you for observation so-" Emmy cut her dad off.
"Dad I'm fine, I'm used to it. I just want to go home."
"Ok." Her dad conceded. "Do you remember what happened? Your friend Miles said you'd been mugged, lucky he was there."
"Miles? I remember being mugged at gun point." She was confused where had Miles been she hadn't seen him, perhaps the adrenaline had blurred out everything around her, but she was sure she had been alone. She remembered he had said not to go out, but he couldn't have known. Could he?
She had been so wrapped up in thought she hadn't noticed her dad had spoken to a nurse. She was only pulled out of her train of thought when the boy in question appeared. His footsteps echoing as he made the short journey from her rooms window to it's door.
"Miles?" He gave her a closed mouthed smile and then hesitated before walking so he stood next to her ankles by the side of her bed. Her parents took this relieve of company to go get a coffee as they had been up all night.
"I'm happy you're awake. I was worried when you were crumpled on the floor."

"Did you see what happened?" Emmy asked.

"No I just found you crumpled on the floor round the corner from 7/11. I called an ambulance and then your parents on your phone." Miles kept shuffling his feet, with the same nervous energy he had had when she met him.

"I'm confused my parents told me they knew I was mugged. I assumed you witnessed it?"

"No. I found you. I must be going, I only stayed because I had to be sure you woke up. Goodbye. Maybe next time you'll listen to me." Before Emmy had a chance to respond further he had already left her room.

It wasn't until a few hours later the doctors discharged her against medical advisement. She wanted to get home. It had taken a second for her to remember they had emigrated to the US when the hospital bill came, and she looked at it with mild confusion.
"Don't worry about it honey." Her dad said taking her furrowed brow for worry. "It's just a matter of fact that living is expensive. At least your mum's job came with health insurance for you."

"Can we go home now? I need a shower." She looked down at her clothes which we covered in dirt and her hair was still tangled.

"Sure, sweetheart." Her mum wrapped a comforting hand around her waist, her mum being too short to wrap it around her shoulders.
