Year 1
Athena JonesI wanted my first year at Hogwarts to be a success. I just wanted to be flawless in all the things I do. Professor Horace Slughorn had formed groupings of people. I got Hazel, Blaise, Dahlia, and William by chance.
We were advised to produce Boil Cure.
Blaise was mixing the snake fangs, and Dahlia was constantly stirring it, while William was handing Blaise supplies and Hazel and I were directing them by reading the recipe.
“Uh…next, we have to put Porcupine quills,” I say as I read from the book before turning to William and handing Blaise the quills.
The Porcupine quills were thrown into the mix by Blaise. Dahlia was constantly stirring it.
As I read, Hazel continued, “Now pour Stewed Horned Slugs till it turns Turquoise, then cook the mixture for a few minutes, and it’s done.”
After the mixture turned turquoise, Blaise followed Hazel’s instructions. “I think it’s done,” William said, peeking at the mixture. Blaise and Dahlia smiled. I followed suit, taking a quick peek at the potion before frowning.
“It still has to be heated; when it’s done, it should become red,” I said as they stared at her.
“But, it isn’t written anywhere?” Hazel frowned.
I said, “Oh, my mother once told me about this,” and Hazel nodded slowly.
The potion seemed to take forever to turn red. At first, it was only a light orange color, as the heat from the cauldron was too weak.
“All right, then, let’s wait a few minutes more,” Blaise agreed and shrugged.
“What are you doing there?”
Malfoy, Parkinson, Greengrass, Nott, and Pucey were among those to whom my group turned our heads to gaze, just beside our table. Who was plainly having trouble cooperating together.
“R-reading,”
“Reading? I had no idea you could read!” Before ripping the book from Pucey’s grip, Malfoy spat.
“They’re probably going to blow up the entire classroom,” William said, drawing Parkinson’s attention as she flashed him a death stare.
It had already been fifteen minutes since Blaise put the stewed horned slugs in the cauldron.
And the group besides was becoming increasingly annoyed with Malfoy’s and Greengrass’s comments. Blaise, normally a cool head, was starting to get angry, while Hazel was growing red in the face, and Dahlia was biting her lip hard. William was the only one who seemed unfazed by Malfoy.
Suddenly, Greengrass raised her voice, “You see, the trouble is that they’re a bunch of mindless dolts.” This prompted my group to raise their voices as well.
“Says the one who can’t even make a simple potion.” Blaise countered.
“Why don’t you try to make it yourself, since you know so much?”, Greengrass spat
“Oh, our potion is already ready,” William says, turning his chair around to face her.
Greengrass’ jaw drops when she realizes he’s right. Her lips twitch in anger as she quickly glances back at her own group, trying to hide it.
