His eyes widened in evident surprise.
"Well, that came out of nowhere. I don't think you want to know about my past relationships." You frowned at that, making him sigh. "Listen, I don't have anything to hide." He added.
"Then why the hesitation?" You understood you were abruptly approaching a topic that was perhaps none of your business to so freely pry, and you didn't want him to feel uncomfortable by any means. However, you felt that to reach the next level in this relationship, this conversation had to be breached eventually. The moment just seemed to arrive sooner rather than later.
"I'm not hesitating. I just thought that our date wouldn't involve bringing up the past. But if you really want to know, I'll divulge. Though it's only one."
Clearing his throat, he reached for your hand, caressing your knuckles softly. "I started dating her in my third year of university. She was studying law and was in her last year so we wouldn't have normally interacted. But we had a shared interest in literature. It was a serious commitment we had."
He spoke softly and quietly, paying no mind to the movie, his eyes only trained on you.
"When she graduated and immediately received an opportunity to work overseas, she took it... and I encouraged for her to. It's uncommon for your career to start promptly after education, and the company that reached out to her was prestigious. I knew she would've declined the offer if I asked, but what kind of person would I be to deny someone's success because of my mere selfishness? So she left. We parted on good terms though."
You stared at him, studying his facial expressions. There wasn't pity in your eyes, nor was there any form of jealousy. Only adoration for the selfless, sincere man seated before you.
How did he manage to do it? Everything he exposed to you about his past only made you love him more and more.
"Where is she now?"
"I haven't spoken to her in some time so I don't know where she is, or what she's about to. But I hope she's happy."
"Did you love her?"
He paused.
"I think I did love her. It was the closest thing to real love that I've ever felt before I met you. Back then it was exciting being with her. But it was nothing in comparison to the connection I formed with you. Even now, I can hardly believe I'm sitting here after all we've been through and what we'll experience together down the road. That's what excites me the most. And I have a feeling it won't get boring. I look forward to it, all of it."
Leaning closer, he glided his fingertips over your cheek. "I've said it before, haven't I?
I'm not used to wearing my heart on my sleeve. But for you?" He flashed you his trademark grin, that sweet smile that never failed to make your heart pound. "But for you, I will."
Your head spun, his affectionate sentiments sending you into oblivion as you felt drunk off of his love and presence.
He tucked the strands of hair framing your face behind your ears and whispered, "I don't ever want you to feel like you're not loved. I don't want you to second-guess me, so if you ask me a question, I'll be completely transparent."
And that was all the reassurance you needed.
"Your family, Jungkook."
