Having narrowly saved the Northern Water Tribe from the Fire Nation, Aang, Katara, and Sokka had decided to join Master Pakku on his journey to the South Pole. The companions bade farewell to Chief Arnook and his people, and set off on a Water Tribe ship. Three weeks later one evening, during their voyage, Aang jolted awake with a start. He strode to the deck, gazing silently at the night sky. A moment later, he was joined by Katara.
KATARA: Do you want to talk about it?
AANG: Nah, just a nightmare. I was in the Avatar State, but I was outside my body watching myself. It was scary. I was scary.
Katara grasped his shoulder tenderly.
The next morning, Katara, Aang, and Sokka joined Master Pakku on the deck. The three of them were just preparing to set off for a different destination. Before bidding them goodbye, however, Pakku offered Katara and Aang some gifts.
PAKKU: Katara, I want you to have this. This amulet contains water from the Spirit Oasis. The water has unique properties. Don't lose it.
KATARA: Thank you, Master Pakku.
PAKKU: Aang, these scrolls will help you master waterbending. But remember, they're no substitute for a real master.
Katara beamed at Aang, who smiled softly.
PAKKU: Sokka, take care, son.
Disappointed for not getting anything, a disgruntled Sokka joined Aang and Katara on Appa's back.
PAKKU: Fly straight to the Earth Kingdom base to the east of here. General Fong will provide you with an escort to Omashu. There, you'll be safe to begin your earthbending training with King Bumi.
AANG: Appa, yip yip!
KATARA: Say hi to Gran-Gran for me!
With that, Appa carried Aang and the others into the clouds.
That same day, Prince Zuko and Iroh, after drifting on sea for a long time, reached a lavish spa resort beside a waterfall. Although Iroh was very pleased that they had found a place to relax, Zuko was restless and depressed.
IROH: It's the anniversary, isn't it?
ZUKO: Three years ago today, I was banished. I lost it all. I want it back. I want the Avatar, I want my honor—my throne. I want my father not to think I'm worthless.
Neither the Avatar nor the prince knew it, but someone was crossing the sea on a mighty ship — someone dangerous and menacing — from the Fire Nation.
Meanwhile, Aang, Katara, and Sokka came in sight of the Earth Kingdom base. The cylindrical fortress, surrounded by a circular wall, was located somewhere in the mountains. Appa descended to the courtyard, and the children disembarked. A bearded figure in armor came forward to greet them.
FONG: Welcome, Avatar Aang! I am General Fong, and welcome to all you great heroes—Appa, Momo, brave Sokka, the mighty Katara...
KATARA: Mighty Katara? I like that.
Fong and his troops bowed graciously, and fireworks burst in the sky above the three of them. It was a real hero's welcome! Sokka was amazed.
SOKKA: Not bad! Not bad!
Later, inside the base, Aang, Katara, and Sokka met with General Fong.
