Legends tell of a world of four nations — the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. In these nations lived people who had the ability to control their culture's native element. It was an air form known as bending. A powerful being known as the Avatar, who could manipulate all these elements, kept balance between the four nations, so that none would grow more stronger than the other. This is the tale of one such Avatar — the last of his kind, an Airbender known as Aang.

It began in era of peace when all four nations lived in harmony. But one fateful day, the Fire Nation attacked, sending its armies to destroy villages and conquer the land. Only the Avatar could stop the threat, but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years later, the world was still at war with the Fire Nation, and nearly all had given up hope that the Avatar ever return. But there were some who still believed that one day he would....
