When they were done training North and Zap, they went back into Fyron's hut to discuss who to recruit next. Then Coral had an idea.
"Guys, do you think we could recruit a Meddler? We could find a really trustworthy one and give them a gem."
The other Guardians agreed, Zap only responding with a small "mmmh."
"But how are we going to get out safely to get the Meddler?" Rose piped up.
"Fred's in the way," Fyron piped up.
"We'll use the underground passageway." Coral suggested. "And-"
"You mean you. It's your plan, and if Fred attacks and we're not here, we have no chance of getting the forest or the Gem back," Fyron interrupted Coral.
Coral nodded slowly. She knew what she had to do. She had to safely find Fred without him getting the Nature Gem or no one getting hurt by the booby-traps.
"We probably have to split up, because we don't know where Fred is going to go," North responded.
Just then, there was a gigantic boom outside. Rose opened the door and pushed Coral outside with a bag of food and water. "Go! Be careful and quiet!" Rose exclaimed. "We'll deal with this later!"
Coral nodded and closed the door. She looked around for Fred and didn't see him, so she quietly formed a pair of binoculars made of solid water. Through the lenses, she could see Fred arguing with Lakelynn. He wasn't making any progress. After all, Lakelynn was made of gold. It was getting pretty heated, even one of Fred's agents had to hold Fred back.
"Let-go-of-me!" Coral heard Fred say to his agent. (While trying to kick Lakelynn) "You're going in the portable dungeon!"
"Seriously, Fred, you're going to break your legs kicking me?" Lakelynn snickered.
Coral gulped. If Fred won that fight with Lakelynn, he would be on his way to attack the huts. She watched the agent being carried away. Even though he was her enemy, she felt sorry for him. Just then, another agent threw a net. It covered Lakelynn, and she got tangled up in it. The agent ran forward and tied up the net. I've got to warn the others, Coral thought.
Meanwhile, Lakelynn was protesting loudly.
"Oh, just be quiet!" Fred yelled obnoxiously.
"How about you be quiet!" Lakelynn roared.
Fred looked outraged.
Coral finally tore her eyes away from the scene, and she created a bubble of water. Then she spoke to it.
"Hey guys, you might want to wrap it up because Fred's about to attack the huts. Also Lakelynn's tied up.
Coral."
She finished speaking and she pushed the ball towards Fyron's hut. It would go through the walls of the hut and relay the message in Coral's own voice. When it was gone, she felt around in the grass, trying to find the handle for the trapdoor that led to the passageway. Then her hand brushed over a patch of hard metal. The trapdoor, she thought. Coral found the handle and pulled up on it, revealing a dimly lit hallway. It was pretty far down, but she jumped into it anyway. She landed hard on the brick floor and started walking. She knew that the passageway led to a Meddler town called Ionia. It would be a long walk there, but at least the bricks in the passageway made it cooler and she had food to eat. Then Coral thought about Fred attacking the huts, and she started to run.The loud boom had been something hitting one of the fake towers, and Rose knew it even before she saw it. Everyone was huddled in the basement of Fyron's hut with their hands raised, so if anyone came through the basement door, they could use their powers to fight them off. After a while they put their hands down, for they were getting tired.
"Why isn't Coral back yet?" Fyron asked.
"It takes an hour to get there," Rose answered.
Out of the blue, a glittering ball of water passed through the huts door. Before anyone could say anything, the water bubble spoke:
"Hey guys, you might want to wrap it up because Fred's about to attack the huts. Also Lakelynn's tied up.
Coral."
The bubble burst.
Then, in one fluid motion, Rose grabbed the sword that was hanging on the wall, used her power to wrap it in thorns and pointed it toward the door, eyes blazing. The other Guardians copied her, tweaking their swords with their own powers.
And then the door burst open.
