After Santana's confession, she had collapsed and been inconsolable, so Brittany drove her home and put her to bed. Then the blonde had called her mom to make sure she could stay over.
Even if her mom said no, the cheerio would stay. Santana couldn't be alone tonight. Luckily Susan Pierce was a reasonable woman and said yes.
Brittany stroked Santana's hair lovingly and looked down at her.
Santana's confession had shook her to the core. The Latina had been through so much.
And then there was the other part.
Santana loved her.
She loved her.
Brittany would've said it back in a heartbeat if not for the girl collapsing seconds after she said it. And Brittany did love her. Before, she just knew she liked her. But thinking about it, it was more.
She supposed she always had, since she first saw the gorgeous Latina. She was sexy and beautiful and brilliant and sassy and she was so loyal and protective to Brittany. The cheerio loved her so much.
She needed to say it even if Santana wouldn't hear. "I love you, Santana."
"I love you too, Britt."
It was barely there, and it was mumbled, but Santana had said it. It put the biggest smile on Brittany's face. But soon it dropped.
Santana had also said she couldn't trust her. Not that it was personal, and she didn't take it that way. But it still wasn't easy to hear.
The blonde signed and laid down next to Santana, who snuggled into her. Then she slowly drifted off to sleep.
Brittany awoke to an empty bed and rubbed her eyes, looking around confusedly. It felt like last time. Except she had been the hungover one.
Why wasn't Santana in bed?
She swung her legs over the side of the bed and stood, stretching. She walked into the kitchen to find Santana making breakfast in a grey sweatshirt and black lace panties.
"What're you doing?" She asked, alarmed that after all that Santana was acting all normal.
The brunette whipped around, smiling. "Nothing."
Brittany furrowed her brow. "Are you okay?"
"Why wouldn't I be?"
"Well after last night..."
"You mean how drunk I was? It's okay. I don't get very bad hangovers."
Brittany was beyond confused. Did Santana forget everything or something? "Do you... Remember everything that you told me last night?"
The Latina froze.
She remembered.
"I..."
"Santana why are you acting like it didn't happen?"
The shorter girl unfroze and continued to make breakfast. "Acting like what didn't happen?"
Brittany scoffed, getting annoyed. "Really, Santana? Why are you doing this? You told me things last night! You told me you loved me!"
Santana scoffed. "When did I do that?"
"Why are you doing this?!"
The brunette's small frame shook and she didn't turn around. Then she said in the tiniest, quietest whisper, "I can't."
Brittany wouldn't have hurt it if she hadn't been listening intently. "Why not?" The blonde's voice was softer now.
"I can't talk about it." The Latina drew in short, shaky breaths.
"But why not?" Brittany pressed as gently as she could.
Santana's shoulders shook with silent sobs. "I'm-not-I'm not... I'm not drunk. I can't talk about this sober." She grabbed the counter to support herself but it wasn't enough with her wobbly arms.
The taller girl rushed up just in time to catch her and she held her tightly.
The Latina quieted her sobs after a bit. She wiped her eyes and and stood up, breathing in and out deeply. "I'm not gonna talk about this anymore Brittany. Please don't mention it again."
The blonde was dumbstruck. "But... But don't you want help? You need help. And you said you loved me! Shouldn't we give this a try?"
Santana's eyes were squeezed shut.
"I'm sorry..." Brittany whispered. She needed to stop pushing her luck.
"I also told you that I can't. Not right now. And don't try and get me help. My mom tried to once in a lame attempt to prove she could act like a real mom. It only made things worse."
The taller girl nodded. "I understand I guess... It just makes me really sad."
Santana shrugged. "I just can't right now."
The cheerio sighed sadly. "Will we ever. Be together?"
Santana smiled a watery smile at her. "Someday."
The End.
