Chapter 13

The rain lashed the library windows with its monstrous force. Haruna looked at Nikola who had dozed off in the seat next to her. It looks like they'd be waiting another hour for a train home at this rate. The deceitful weather had lured Haruna into coming to Sydney in t-shirts and shorts without a umbrella. But autumn rain brings with it temperate drops and Haruna would probably been frozen over by the time she got home. Dreary weather almost made Haruna's heavy lidded.

Tomo was probably floating around the library. Which reminded her of the webtoon "Library ghost". Suddenly her phone lit up with message. It was a message from James asking if she wanted to meet up with him for a drink with his friends. James have been tooing and froing over text and Facebook. Just the casual chatter. To her, he seemed nice and decent, outgoing but there also something elusive about him, her curiosity was toying with her. They also went out a few times and stayed at James' house in the company of other friends. Wasn't anything personal. The more they met the more she wanted to find out about him.

So Haruna was quick to reply with a yes. Somehow she was tingling with excitement. She wasn't sure why.

James called it an impromptu date. Haruna felt a little nervous but she manned up to it after considering she couldn't pull out at the last moment. So Haruna was about to ask Nikola until she remembered the unavoidable family dinner because it was her gran's birthday that Nikola carried on about on the train ride up. It was obvious she wasn't a favourite among the relatives that were also coming to dinner.

Then the time came, for the duo to part ways at the train station.

Haruna came to meet James at a casual eat out spot a few stops out of the city before heading home.

"A bit chilly to be in shorts don't you think?" James was quick to say when he spotted Haruna.

"You don't say. The weather is quite deceitful these days. Should have known better."

"Well better get inside shouldn't we?"

James pushed the door open and lead her to a table for two.

"Is this a date?" Tomomi suddenly asked. "Grr. I don't like his vibe. Why do you like dating bad men?"

Haruna shrugged her off and sat down.

"Oh all this good food. Hur I wish I could still eat." Tomomi said to herself as she watched a plate of barbecue ribs pass their table. "But it's not Obon or hungry ghost month." She let out a sigh. "I don't know what I hate more, being dead and invisible or not being able to eat. Ah, it even smells so good."

Haruna tried to shove Tomo's continuous comments aside and looked through the menu.

Only when James left for the men's washroom, Haruna discreetly turned around and looked up at Tomo with furrowed brows and said. "Can you please just shut up for five minutes?"

"Fine. I will. I'll even go outside and wander around town, if you dislike my presence so much." Tomo crossed her arms and floated off. And Haruna returned to browsing the menu and staring at the interior of the restaurant cause her phone had gone flat. Much relieved by the return of James presence and Tomo's absence, they were now able to talk and soon the food came along with the drinks which loosened their tongues more. James ranted about his recent exit from his job, whilst Haruna listened and agreed, sometimes interjecting with her own experiences then ramble on about her life. For once she felt like she managed to click with someone else, a world away from their first awkward unlikely meeting.

Soon the hours passed and they would pass and they would part. Or a little later than Haruna had thought. Just as they walked out, James gruffly whisked her aside into a dark side street. Haruna's heart begin to pound. She begun to resist but James had a strong grip on her light frame. What did he want what was he going to do her? Her body unable to move fast enough away from what her body screamed to be impending doom.
