Chapter 2
The last of sun’s rays beamed in the evening sky. Haruna trudged up the steep stairs of her house. The automatic sensor light lit up when Haruna arrived at the front door. She heaved and threw her bag on the ground. It’s funny how mum bought the last house on the dead end of the street right against the eerie backdrop of the native forest…
Haruna fiddled with the lock trying to get the right key into on its right side to fit in. Dad fixed in a new lock, after mum had a massive panic attack about losing her keys. She could hear Mary scratching on the other side.
“Wait a second Mary. I’m trying just to open this stupid damn door.”
Mary pounced on Haruna as soon as she opened the door. Getting rape licked in the face by the family dog. And nearly slipping on the tiled floor….
Haruna heaved the towering dog off her. But Mary the Great Dane wouldn’t budge.
“Let’s try another tactic… Mary are you hungry my little princess?” Haruna cooed. Mashing the dog’s face silly.
Mary automatically jumped off and darted to the kitchen and barked to announce she was there.
Haruna sighed and dropped backpack on the sofa.
Mum was on a business trip and dad wasn’t back just yet.
Mary barked again. She was clearly getting impatient.
Haruna shuffled to the kitchen. Grabbed a can of dog food and dumped it into Mary’s food bowl.
She looked at her brother gaming away on his console on the family couch and widescreen TV.
“Hideto, why didn’t feed her?” She asked, impatiently.
“Later.” Her brother groaned.
Mary’s tail wagged like a happy windscreen wiper as she gobbled down her food. Haruna smiled with her hands on hips. Mary was Haruna’s home buddy after her major car accident a couple of years before.
“Full yet Mary?” Haruna asked.
Mary barked a reply. She seemed to understand human speech all too well.
Haruna picked up her backpack and shut herself in her room. Sudden fatigue overwhelmed her like a tsunami wave, taking all her energy with it. She took out her laptop, note book and pencil case, throwing the backpack next to her desk.
She walked feebly towards her bed and collapsed causing the bed to squeak. Panting, sweat sprouting from her forehead, it felt so hard to breath. Her stomach hungered for sustenance but not of ordinary human sustenance.
Haruna forced herself to get up. She peered self-consciously at the mirror. Her dark Asian hair was tousled and slightly messed. She tried to smile, only a tired smile reflected. A normal 24 year old Asian stared back with the absence of normal coloured eyes… glowing bright eyes looked back at her instead of her usual brown.
“Not again…” Haruna moaned.
Her stomach growled again, sticking rods of pain into her abdomen. She grimaced at the mirror and left the room.
Haruna yelled. “Oi tell dad I’m at Gran Mavis’ house next door alright?”
Her teenage brother couldn’t care less about his “annoying” sister anyway.
“Yeah…” He yelled back. Not looking away from the TV screen, desperately scoring combos on his new Play Station game.
Haruna slipped on her thongs (note: by thongs I mean flip flops or slippers, etc.) and left the house. She walked to the country styled house next door. The stairs were a little creaky from age and the weather. Haruna knocked gingerly fly screen door and stepped back a little embarrassed.
