Chapter 5
Haruna felt guilt-ridden sitting quietly in the corridor on a plastic chair provided at the last minute. The others were sitting further down the hall way. Haruna was fighting herself, one moment cussing to herself for nosing her way into things that should’ve been left to the unfortunate discovery of another unlucky individual. But then the other side of her mind retaliated: “Be happy! You’ve helped an unfortunate person. She looked down at personal information form and rapidly tapped her pen out of boredom and tingling nervousness.
The sarcastic joy of having to later explain to her parents she was caught up in a police station. Which will singlehandedly set fire to their infinite questions before she could get to the reason as to why she was there in first place; as per usual of Asian parents.
The moments that passed grew tenser. The door knob clicked open. Mami winked to her when she went in.
In the middle of the medium sized room surrounded by white walls on all sides and white office lights not to the mention the glass panel with possible unknown personas behind it. Watching, watching closely at her every move. On the hunt to catch any suspicious movements… Haruna believed.
“Better not fuck up this one…” She thought. She took her seat on the collapsible chair. Facing her was a Chinese looking man in his later 20s. It was the same officer who dealt with her car accident and now here he was again.
“Hi I’m Ian, nice to meet you.” He held out his hand. Ian noticed the distinct ring on Haruna’s thumb when they shook hands.
“Hey wait why does she have this?” He thought to himself, his suspicions about this lady sparked by that very ring.
“Hi I’m Haruna…” Haruna said shyly.
“Oh I remember you.” He smiled lightly.
Haruna smiled shyly. “I remember you too.”
“Ofcourse he does…” Haruna groaned to herself. The only car accident survivor who survived possibly fatal wounds. Yes, everyone would remember that one miraculous absurd case…
“I’m told by the previous lady I interviewed, you’re one who initially found the disarrayed body. Is that correct?”
“Yes, but she was also there with me at the scene…” Haruna said uncomfortably, remembering the horror.
“Ok… What lead you to the site?”
“Erm…” Haruna look at her lap. She could feel the tension growing within. Her fingers scrunched into a fist, the tingles danced up her arm and through her upper body.
“It’s recorded on the digital voice recorder and camcorder.” She looked frankly at Ian.
Ian took out the devices that Haruna had used from the table’s drawer.
He began replaying the audio, fast forwarding to the moment of haruna’s words. The voice recorder repeated Haruna and Mami’s conversation.
“Why do I smell rotting meat?”
“It’s a cemetery?”
“No… not because of that…”
“Dead animal?”
“Can’t you smell it?”
“Yes?!"
Ian pressed stop on the recorder. He nodded. “Not bad…” He then asked. “How far were you two from the body, approximately?”
“About close to 50 metres away, I think?” Haruna said nervously but truthfully. Her jaw clenched tight. “Was it 50 metres? Or am I too close? Just don’t find me guilty of this…” she thought, it was half a prayer to God.
