Chapter 9

Alone in his office, a doctor sat at his consulting desk, anatomical posters covered his white wash clinic walls. He pushed his glasses back and continued reading from his computer screen, occasionally typing notes. There wouldn't be a patient consultation till 3:30: plenty of time.

He enjoyed the quiet times in his busy schedule, time to slow down and unwind from all the patients' problems. The out of place of knock at the door caught him by surprise. He exhaled and said "come in".

Ian gingerly poked his head the gap.

"Long-time no see! How have you been?" He stood up and welcomed Ian in.

"Busy as usual." Ian said casually. Opening the door slightly more.

"Good, good. Come in, take a seat."

The two sat. Ian casually glanced at the anatomical posters, trying to recall various bones names; trivial fun.

"How can I help you?" The doctor leaned in forward, with a warm paternal smile.

"Look, another gruesome murder has been left again but I guess that's not the reason I came here."

"There were two ladies who stumbled on the scene."

"Was this on the news a few weeks ago?"

"Yes. There was a few peculiarities surround things case."

"Continue."

"When I interviewed them, one of them wore one of your rings." Ian said suspiciously.

"Really?" The doctor seemed quizzical on the outside but inside he knew exactly who Ian was describing.

"It's the silver ring with a skull insignia, you said the next person you helped, would receive that ring... Why does she have it?"

The doctor smiled. "She was the person I helped."

"What do you mean?"

"She's a family friend of mine." Not wanting to reveal too much, he decided to change the subject. "All odds were against her in surviving. So I had saved her."

"As in you gave her your infected blood."

"Yes." The doctor said.

Ian fell silent. "And how are you going to explain to her when she finds out?"

"I don't know." The doctor shook his head and rested it on his fist.

Ian exhaled and leaned back in his seat.

How was the interview then?" The doctor asked.

"Unfortunately I could only retrieve minimal information from her... I felt like she was still hiding something but I couldn't press on... well she had a panic attack."

"Oh yes, do remember, it's one of the invisible scars she bears from that car accident." The doctor bore a serious face. "Lucky as she is to have healed perfectly on the surface, there are wounds inside that won't mend. You can never be too forceful with her."

Ian looked down. "Sorry."

"Be more mindful."

"That explains why I felt a strange vibe from her... but as for now we can sure it is the same killer, the modus operandi is the identical. Even the recent victim looks similar to the previous one."

"I see... so how did she find the murder scene?"

"Well she said there was an apparent odour of rotten meat. Her accompanying partner said she didn't think much of it but the acrid odour became too strong to ignore. The murder scene was a nightmare to solve, limbs scattered everywhere. And it still is. Oh and the heart near the head, drained of blood."
