Chapter 10

“Next stop Circular Quay.” Said a gruff voice over the train cabin speakers, by the train driver.

“Wake up sunshine.” Nikola said.

“I know.” Haruna groaned. She took off her glasses to rub her sore eyes before putting them back on.

The two girls stepped off the station platform and travelled down the escalator. Nikola glanced at Haruna who remained in her half-awake state. The quay was already bustling with locals and tourists alike, the sound of ferry horns echoed in the distance.

“Guess you had a rough night hey?” Nikola asked.

“Yeah a rough few nights actually.”

“What happened?”

“Weird stuff.” Haruna said, noting that she didn’t want to speak further of it.

After the quick exchange of responses, the two kept to themselves, each plugged into their own world of music.

Though the sun was out and the sky was cloudless, deceitfully low temperatures mismatched its setting.

The coldness ate at their faces as they walked their short journey towards the Sydney Conservatorium of Music; even breathing the air made her lungs ache. She bunched her thick scarf closed to her neck hoping it’d warm up her more. Low temperature almost felt like “instant Botox” as Alan Carr said. Haruna loved watching his side splitting comedic talk show and stand up.

“How’s your research going?” Haruna asked.

“Don’t even ask.” Nikola said.

“Fine.” Haruna said simply, “Then shall we get coffee to perk us up?” Haruna suggested.

Nikola nodded and they headed to closest café.

“She’s never gonna leave me alone is she?” Haruna muttered, perhaps a little loudly. She eyed Tomo waiting outside the coffee shop staring at a group of Chinese tourists.

“Huh, what are you talking about?” Nikola said.

“Nothing.” Haruna said as she paid for her coffee. She grabbed her coffee and sat at window seat; the only two vacant spots in the coffee shop. She thought about the things that happened the night before, slowly rotating the skull ring around her finger. Nikola sat down in the seat beside her and broke her chain of thought.

“So what happened?”

“There were two things that happened. You won’t believe either of them.”

“No, come on, you know I believe what you say.”

Haruna exhaled. “See that girl standing out there.” She pointed at Tomo who was stretching and twirling around because she felt like it and no one could see her being an idiot in public, well asides from Haruna and Nikola who couldn’t give shit about what she was doing.

“No… but continue.” Nikola said.

Haruna stopped short. “Just comes to show that I am really going mad.” She said.

“You’ve been telling me the same thing for the past year or so and you’re not! Come on just tell me what happened.” Nikola said.

“In a nutshell, shit happens when I haven’t drunk blood in months. I’m trying to get used to that.  But this ghost appears to me like angel saying she’s going to help me. Please tell me I’m going nuts…”

“Actually I did see that girl you’re pointing at. Not one of them Chinese tourist is it?” Nikola said in a serious tone.

“Yeah… wait what? She looked weirdly at Nikola.
