Chapter 7

“Could you play that section again? This time lift your fingers off the keys more.” Rina smiled. “It’s supposed to be short and sharp.”

A girl, who looked about 9 or 10, looked quizzically at her and tried again. The sound came out clearly this time instead of notes being squashed together.  

The child’s mum smiled Rina from the kitchen. The girl sudden stopped and turned.

“Rina, is that supposed to be ‘g” or g sharp?”

“Let me see. It’s a g natural remember. You were playing the right thing. It goes g, b, e”

“Ok” said the girl and went back to playing.

Then she started to slow down, peering at the note for moments stretching it as long as possible before playing it. Rina knew she was struggling.

“How about we play that separately and we’ll do it together?”

The girl nodded.

“This time count and play a little slower.” Rina said, pretending to be stern.

The girl giggled and they played together. Two separate hands danced across the keys.

“That was much better. And there goes our half an hour, remember to count.” Rina took the girl’s piano book and drew brackets on the sheet music. Practise separate hands to bar 20, three times then play it together ok?”

The girl nodded enthusiastically.

“There you go.” Rina handed her back her piano book.

“Simone is going great.” Rina said.

“That’s good to hear. She always excited about her having her piano lessons.”

Simone ran and hugged her mum, kissing her mum on the shoulder.

“Would you like to join us for lunch? I’ve got the fish and chips in the oven and they’re nearly ready.”

“Sure, Mrs Lee.”

“Yay chippies!” Simone pipped.

“Go and set the table, they’re nearly ready dear.” Simone’s mum emptied the fish and chips onto a serving bowl and tossed the salad.

Simone took the white serving plates from the kitchen drawer and loaded the cutlery on top.

“Careful darling. You look like you’re going to drop them.”

“Let me take it.” Rina said and took the plates and cutlery from Simone.

Mrs Lee bought the salad and bowl of fish and chips over to the dining table.

“Yum.” Simone snatched a chip for herself.

“Simone” Her mum glared.

Simone giggled and snatched another one.

“Here.”

Rina tipped a quarter of the chips onto Simone’s plate.

“There you go you hungry little monster!”

Simone took up and munched in Rina’s face.

“That’s too much.” Mrs Lee tutted and took some from Simone’s portion and put them onto Rina’s plate.

“Thanks but I’ll serve myself, after you.”

“No, no it’s fine.”

So Rina took some salad and poured some homemade dressing over it.
