Chapter 1
Two ordinary girls walked through the busy streets of the Sydney’s CBD. No one would take much notice of the two. But they will be the introducing characters of our story. The sun was three quarters of its way through the sky, in the early autumn afternoon. The two girls in their early twenties were in the crowd of the rush hour people. But they weren’t “rushing” home just yet. Come on… it’s Friday, afternoon time for easing into the weekends.
One of them carried a massive tote bag, her knee length floral dress, black tights and ballet flats described her feminine side. She wore a white cotton knitted, buttoned jacket which ended half way down her thighs. Her bob cut hair shone a light brown, some black growth was beginning to seep through; time for a redye... it sucked being Asian for that matter.
Her friend had a more rugged, practical outlook. She wore generic dark red skinny jeans and well-worn Union Jack Dr Martens. A massive backpack on top of a black hoodie, sleeves rolled up. Inside she wore a worn union jack designed t-shirt. Days prior, she decided she make things a little bit more “different” so in a frenzy of colour selection. She chose toned purple over a continuous redye of generic blonde.
“What about this one?” Mami pointed at one of the cake shops along Chinatown. Her bob cut counterpart shrugged. “Yeah” she couldn’t care less. Her shoulder was aching from her heavy bag.
Mami shrugged back and they entered the café. Mami eyed the rows of delicate cakes and slices, as they sat down near the window. It was a pretty empty café, a few people sat further in. The waitress bought over the afternoon tea menu. Mami dismissed the menu and asked for a pearl milk tea. Her friend continued to scan the menu. The waitress changed her posture waiting for her to order.
“Rina…” Mami mouthed.
“Oh-oh sorry…” Rina stuttered. “Um I’d like a small latte please.” She smiled, handing over the menus.
“We’d like to order some cakes as well.” Mami said, getting up from cushy seat against the wall.
Mami bent over, to inspect the row of cakes. Rina swivelled around in her seat. “I’m getting that New York Cheese cake.
“K” Mami grunted as continued to browse the cakes. “I can’t make up my mind.” She whined. She walked up to counter pulling out her wallet. She leant over the coffee bench.
“What do you recommend?” she asked the waitress.
The waitress smiled nervously. “The black sesame sponge roll is my favourite.” She laughed nervously.
“Ok. I’ll have that. How much is it all together?”
The waitress punched the numbers into the cash register.
“That comes to $16.50.”
Mami handed over a red twenty dollar note. “Keep the change.”
Rina looked up from her engrossing photography magazine and Mami landed heavily on the cushioned seating against the wall.
“I swear, I’m so tired…” Mami yawned. Stretching her arms, tensed her muscles cracking her elbow.
Rina continued to gloss through her magazine, looking at the lenses section and new on the market SLR cameras; paying no attention to her friend. Sydney’s Chinatown continued to bustle with locals and tourists alike. The dying afternoon light made no difference.
The waitress brought out their drinks and cakes.
“Wah… There’s my cake!” Mami said excitedly.
“Here’s your latte.” The waitress slid the well-made latte in front of Rina and placed her cake next to it.
“And your pearl milk tea and black sesame sponge roll.”
