Faith's pov
We managed to get the job done; we got to the cathedral, killed Tiamat, take her heart and bring it back to Samael for whatever reason. As me and War got outside we are left with another problem. Getting here was one thing, returning is another since all paths that lead here are cut off and our only form of transport has been killed.
"What do we do now War?" I asked him as he just stared at the magma below. He didn't say anything but a very familiar voice did.
"Tragic. Without your feathered friend, how will you both escape this prison of rock," said Vulgrim as he appeared next to us and out of nowhere.
"I'll find a way."
"You have certainly proven yourself....resourceful. Perhaps I can provide a quicker way."
"You can?"
"Speak plainly demon," War said to him as he was slowly losing his patience with the merchant.
"Serpent Holes. Ancient paths that worm their way beneath the husk of the dead world and beyond. I use them to get about, and for a price...so can you two."
"What do you want Vulgrim."
"A trifle really...the Chosen's heart. I felt its power the moment you stepped out of the tower."
The minute he said that both me and War just looked at him sternly. Samael wants the heart but apparently so does Vulgrim. Even if it would be just a quick look, he is not someone that you could easily trust when it comes to situations like this.
"How do we know that you won't try anything once you see it," I asked the demon.
"You wound me, Angel and Horseman. I would never come between you and your friend Samael. No, I only wish to look at the heart. One glance...and our bargain is sealed."
"As much as I hate to say this but I think we should War."
"Your certain Faith?"
"We have no other option and we do need to return to Samael."
War didn't say another word after that as he just keeps his eye contact on Vulgrim, most likely wondering considering what I said. Then he slowly lifted his hand and showed the heart. Vulgrim is known to be a very hard demon to satisfy, you got to know what takes his fancy to be in his good books and when he saw Tiamat's heart, he was the happiest I've ever seen him be. However, I think he was becoming too happy as he was that close to touching it, till War pulled it away from his reach.
"A glance Vulgrim. That's what we agreed on and nothing else. Now, may we use the Serpent Holes," I said to the merchant while he held a hard and displeased expression on me but quickly changed.
"Samael will be pleased. The Serpent Holes are yours, Angel and Horseman. Seek me out when you wish to use them."
Without wasting any more time, we made our way to the Serpent Hole that's just outside and very close to the doors to the cathedral. And when we went I was honestly surprised; this was my first time travelling or even used them before. Having to be in this void, surrounded by a ghostly blue mixed with green, stone pillars floating in the air and stone pathways appearing out of nowhere. Then we finally made it to the end, got back into the Thrid Kingdom and made our way back to Samael who was sitting on one of the blood fountains, waiting for us.
"I trust that she suffered?"
"Not nearly enough," Watcher said to him while War hold out Tiamat's heart to the demon.
"Beautiful," he said as he admire it for a short moment till he suddenly snatched it out of War's hand and holds it close, almost like he was given a stolen item that was returned. Or maybe, wanting to prevent us from taking it away.
"The second Guardian, the Griever, moves in the tunnels beneath this place. But first, there is an obstacle that must be removed. Ulthane. One of the Old Ones."
"You didn't mention that before."
"Changing the deal already, Samael?"
"Be silent, filth. My business is with the Horseman," he said as he smacked the Watcher away with such force that he collided with one of the fountains. In a way, I couldn't blame him for doing so.
"Ulthane is no ally of the Destroyer...but you won't find the Griever without confronting the Black Hammer. And that will require strength you don't posses...yet." At first, I had no idea what Samael was saying till he suddenly uses his power on the Watcher who was trying to get back up.
"What the hell do you think you're doing Samael?!"
"Tell him, Watcher. How you stifle the Horseman's true power in order to keep him on the Council's leash." From that very moment, I was honestly shocked. I know that War had lost his power but the Watcher was holding him back from it. And for what? Just so that he remains on the Council's good side. Either way, I'm very glad that Samael pointed that out. It was then that I realised what he is doing; Samael is trying to get War to break the chained leash that Watcher put on him. If that chain were to be broken then some of War's power will return.
"War, destroy this parasite."
"You so much as blink at me and the Council will end you. All of you! I'm protected!"
"Not in here," said Samael as he made it clear that this place is well beyond the Council's power.
"You are War! Rider of the Red Horse! Not some puppet on this pathetic creature's strings!"
"War, I will make you suffer!"
"Focus your anger. A great rage stirs within you, clawing to get out. You must release it. Or a puppet you'll remain."
When it comes to the power of the Horseman, it's never something I could ever understand unlike the power of the Council but I can feel a great power filling the air around us. The anger, the rage, War's power has returned as I watched on in awe as he struck the Watcher as a form of retaliation for the way he treated him. Seeing him like this brought back some memories, back when I first laid eyes on him. I was intimidated by him at first but I've grown fond of him, so much so that my own heart speeds up for him, how I longed to be safely held by him; but it is War so there's no hope that he could ever think nor see me similar like I do with him. His role as the Horseman and his brothers comes first more than anything else.
"You are reborn!" Samael said as he began to laugh while Watcher pulled himself back up after being crushed into the ground.
"What...was that?!"
"The Horseman is broken, but there is so much power in him. For a moment I saw one who will stand alone against the Destroyers army," he explained to him as War walked off to find Ulthane and to kill the Griever. As I caught up with him, a thought was lingering in my mind, why does the name Ulthane sound so familiar to me.
