Chapter 6 - An old mansion

After we had shot the last episode for the series about haunted houses, we were given a whole ten days' vacation by our supervisors. We needed that after all the hard work. It took us four months to shoot the series, we went around the world to more than 30 locations and then spent a month in our studio selecting the 12 best haunted houses and editing the episodes.

And as soon as we sold the series to the TV station, they asked for another season. But honestly? I decided not to go to another haunted house. We all decided we wouldn't. So they put a new team together around Gary, who had no choice because of his contract with our company and the TV station, and had to be involved again.

Walter also decided to produce the new season. But all the rest of us pulled out of that project and got a new project, but it wasn't supposed to start until after our vacation. This was also about old abandoned houses and even villages and whole towns, but not about hauntings.

I spent five of my ten days of vacation with my parents. We hadn't seen each other in a long time and it was time to annoy them again. Then I spent two days with my brother, who was going through a difficult time because it was unclear how long he would have his job after it came out that the company he works for is in financial trouble. He is still working there!

I was going to spend the last three days of my vacation going to some old abandoned houses with my Urban Explorer team. The plan was for us to go to 4 houses. But because we couldn't find access to the one house and it was too well guarded, we ended up with only three houses. And we saved the best for last. An old manor house!

There wasn't much to see in the first two houses. The suspense level was at most three points out of ten. Almost everything had already been destroyed and smeared. And this one house was already in very bad shape. So we were hoping for a lot from the mansion.

As for my job, I had done a lot of research on the mansion beforehand. I found out that it was a well-preserved Victorian mansion that had been abandoned for about 30 years. Only because of the good protected location, namely in the dense forest, it could remain so well preserved until today.

It was built by a rich American in 1840 and I don't know why he had it built in a dense forest. He lived there with his wife and their 7 children. They had several employees who also lived in the house. Their rooms were on the first floor near the kitchen.

About the life of the master of the house I found out that he had a very sheltered life with his family. His mother took care of him and his 9 siblings. His father earned his money as a manager of a bank. At the same time he also owned several houses which he rented out. The family was doing very well financially.

At the age of 14, Roberts, as he was called, dropped out of school and ran away from home after repeated arguments with his father, who considered him uneducated and lazy. Roberts initially tried to sneak into the Army. But they quickly found out he was only 14 years old and sent him away again. He then found a job on a ship as a cabin boy and mate.

After just four exhausting years on the high seas, Roberts had had enough of the hard work and ruefully returned to his parents, who immediately took him back in.

A year later, he married the daughter of a wealthy businessman. The marriage was arranged by his parents. However, Roberts got along well with his wife and even learned to love her. This was probably due to the fact that she was a beautiful woman and financed everything he wanted. Only two years after their marriage, they had their first child, a son.
