Chapter 25 - The First Time

After we uncovered the truth about Shuang and Zhan's parents, saw Shuang's ex-wife and her husband receive their sentences in court, and all of us together, Zhan, Yanli, Cheng and I said goodbye to Zhan's parents and Shuang, the good news didn't stop there.

That same evening, Yanli confessed to us that she has finally accepted the proposal from her boyfriend, now fiancé, and they will be getting married very soon. She is even now living with her fiancé. Cheng reported that he will go abroad for two years to further study medicine. His professor got him the job abroad.

The next thing Cheng told us surprised me most of all. Obviously, Zhan and I had missed out on a few things in the past few months. For example, that my big brother and Cheng started dating! And the two are apparently in their relationship already so far that Cheng even lives with my brother and my brother will accompany him abroad. And that were really news with which none of us expected.

But then it also made Zhan and me ask, "Who the hell is going to live in the apartment anyway after you two move in with your partners?"

Yanli and Cheng then showed us their front door and apartment keys and replied at the same time, "We hope you'll both live in it."

Yanli then explained in more detail, "You two are also engaged to be married soon. Living in a shared apartment with your best friend and his partner may be great. But when you're married, surely it would be nicer to have your privacy."

I nodded and said, "That's exactly what Zhan and I planned. We've talked about wanting to have our own place." Yanli and Cheng then handed us their keys and said the lease would be in both of our names starting next month and that we could move in right away.

Honestly, we were overwhelmed. Although the apartment rent is quite expensive, the apartment is in a great location and is very large and spacious. I felt very comfortable there from the beginning. The only problem is that we would have to travel a long way for our jobs. However, Zhan already had a solution for that.

He reminded me that there was also a homicide department there and that they had already offered Zhan a job. And I would study again first anyway. I want to take some courses that will help me as a journalist in matters of criminalistics and everything that goes with it. Because I have always saved money, I can afford this study and do not have to go to work on the side.

So the decision for the apartment was easy for us. We toasted with Yanli and Cheng with a glass of champagne. After that, the two of them went on their way again. It had been a long and eventful day and we all needed sleep badly. Especially Zhan and I, since we had slept very little in the last few weeks.

Then, as Zhan and I lay in bed, we noticed a strange silence. Also, we both noticed that since we were at the accident site and said goodbye to Zhan's parents and Shuang, we felt much lighter. Relieved around the heart and like we were really alone now. This feeling was so strange that we wondered if maybe Zhan's parents, or rather their spirits, were always around us and that's why we could never really move on in our relationship?

Because it's a fact that whenever we tried to sleep with each other, something idiotic would happen that at some point we couldn't explain. Like in that hotel, when suddenly the fire alarm went off, and that was exactly at the moment when Zhan and I got closer and wanted to try. And no one could explain who or how the fire alarm went off.

So were we actually never alone? If so, when did Zhan's parents join us? Were they perhaps with Zhan in the mansion? Were he, even though he was a ghost himself at the time, and I just not able to see them? Was there or is there a difference between the spirits of the deceased and those who are like Zhan was?

Questions upon questions. In the end, we can only make assumptions and our strong guess is that Zhan's parents really were always by our side in their spirit form. And thinking that they were always with us, I'm glad we never went further than kissing and cuddling with each other. Which I guess they made sure of.
