Now my uncle was hooked. We had aroused his curiosity and he wanted to know more. As a prosecutor, he always wants to know everything in detail. And so he phoned back and forth and then, with a feigned grin, slammed the receiver down on the telephone and prepared a letter. When he had finished it, he sent his assistant with it to a certain judge.
After only a few minutes, the assistant was back with the judge's signature. We had received a demand for cooperation from all instances! Now the police, the murder investigation and all the others had to give us information. And because my uncle was really hooked, he grabbed his jacket and said, "Let's go, we're going to find out who the Xiao's are and what happened to them!"
I didn't even know what hit me, it happened so fast all of a sudden. And I couldn't believe how excited my uncle was. Normally he didn't show this kind of behavior. No matter what happened, he always had the same expression in his eyes. But suddenly his eyes even lit up and he seemed really excited.
We then also rode in my uncle's car, which gave me the opportunity to ask him if he had changed. He laughed!!! He really laughed and said, "I've been doing intensive therapy for 5 years and finally it's having an effect." I was stunned!
"I am speechless." I simply said.
My uncle laughed again and then explained to me why he had developed this disease in the first place. "Ever since I was very young, I have been able to see ghosts. Spirits like Xiao Zhan. But also ghosts of people who looked cruelly disfigured. I was so afraid of them that I developed night fright and couldn't sleep. My parents didn't believe me, the doctors didn't believe me, and then there were all these other kids who constantly teased me. Everyone called me a freak, crazy, insane, or whatever else they could think of. And at some point to protect myself, I developed this disease."
"Because if you don't feel anything, you can't get hurt. Right?" Asked Zhan.
"Yes, exactly. But with the new therapy, it's beginning now. I at least slowly recognize positive feelings and feel them myself. It doesn't work often yet. But today it did."
"Wow, that's really Great!" I said. And I meant it. I'm happy for my uncle. Maybe someday I will like him after all. At that moment, anyway, I did.
We drove to the homicide squad. At first they didn't even want to let us in, but then they recognized my uncle, with whom they often have to deal because of his work. And when he presented them with the judge's order forcing them to make a statement about Xiao Ling, we were taken to an empty office where we had to wait for the supervisor.
He took quite a long time and only came to see us in the office after more than half an hour. But he had a file with him that was not very thin. And I didn't like the name on it at all. "Xiao Family Murder Case" I saw Zhan shaking, which always looks like he's flickering.
The supervisor Mr. Peng sat down and told us what he knew. "So 2 years ago, the Xiao family was on their way home from vacation when a garbage truck crashed into their car. Officially, four of the five family members died. Xiao Zhan, was seriously injured and has been in a coma ever since." I felt sick to my stomach.
My uncle had interrupted Mr. Peng by asking, "It wasn't an accident, was it?"
"No. At first, we still assumed it was an unfortunate accident. But then someone remembered the driver's name, in connection with another murder case. That involved a young employee at a very trendy restaurant. She was raped and then murdered. And Mr. Shuang was identified as the perpetrator through a DNA comparison."
"So?" I asked.
"We arrested him, he was convicted, and he went to jail. But he kept protesting his innocence. No one believed him, though. A year after his arrest, his wife divorced him and he was no longer allowed to see his two young children. So he had lost everything. His well-paying job, his house, his wife, his children and his freedom. And that made him really angry. Through his lawyer, he found out who had worked on his case. The name Xiao Ling came up. But he was not entrusted with the case at all. He was only sent to the restaurant to help when our colleagues took saliva samples from all the employees. He did nothing more than take the saliva samples and bring them to the lab!"
