Kaden

When we come home, the first thing I do is go to dad's office to find the files Dexter sent him. I have free reign over everything concerning my parents' business, so I know exactly where the file is. I know for a fact that Dexter gave dad Fred's background information and intel about his activities from the time he was tracking him down.

While my little fairy helps the cooks make dinner - even though I told her she doesn't need to do that - I read Fred's file. He's a crafty motherfucker, I have to admit. He's traveled around almost the whole country, no doubt using the settlement money my parents gave Wanda, and everywhere he went, he visited a couple of casinos and bars. Just in Vegas, he visited seven places.

There's no telling what trouble he's in or who he pissed off.

Damn it.

Having heard my parents' story about the loan shark that almost killed them twenty years ago, I am slightly paranoid about Fred. Who's to say he didn't drag my Faye into his shit? What if the people he crossed come after my Fairy? What if they try to hurt her? I don't even know if Fred simply borrowed money from some shady people or did something worse.

I hate not knowing. Ignorance can bring big trouble. It's better to be prepared for everything rather than count on a miracle.

I'm not stupid enough to believe that Fred is a decent human being.

It's best to prepare for the worst.

Fuck it all to hell. Just when things are getting better between Faye and me something has to go wrong. I absolutely hate how anxious my Fairy has been since she saw Fred this morning and how much he and Wanda still affect her even though she's not with them anymore. She doesn't deserve to be dragged into those people's mess. They don't have the right to force themselves back into Faye's life after the way they treated her.

"Kaden!" Faye sings adorably as she knocks on the door. "Dinner's ready," she announces, tentatively peeking into the room. "What are you doing?" she asks suspiciously when she sees me sitting at dad's desk.

"Just checking the files Dexter compiled on Fred. I want to know what he's up to," I sigh heavily, getting up from my seat. "But I didn't find anything useful. There's no way to tell who exactly we're dealing with and it frustrates me."

"So we don't know what trouble he's in?"

"We don't," I shake my head dejectedly, "I don't even know if he's simply in debt or it's more serious."

"Let's not think about this now," Faye smiles sadly, taking my hand in hers, "it's time for dinner, then homework, and then we can worry about other things. Okay?" How is she so calm now when she literally freaked out earlier?

"Okay," I agree, leaning down to give her a quick kiss.

We head downstairs to the kitchen, having seen no point in using the dining room when it's just the three of us - Faye, Gio and I.

"Finally! I was about to start without you." Gio says with his mouth full. You've already started, idiot.

Faye and I only blink at him incredulously. "You're already eating, Gio," my fairy comments, making Gio turn to us with a look I can only describe as 'oh shit'.

"I'm not," he denies weakly, hurriedly swallowing his food as if to hide the evidence. Idiot. He's a goddamn idiot.

"You're ridiculous." I shake my head at him before Faye and I take our seats at the big island. Before I can even move to serve my fairy her dinner, Kenny, one of our chefs, brings out the plates that are just heaping with food. Does he think we've been starving the whole day?
