Mirabel began rushing away, Camilo trailing behind her. He walked backwards for the first few steps, continuing to face you. He sent you a quick wink before turning around, catching up with his cousin.

--

You tugged at the strings of the rough guitar from the family room,  watching the clock. You were anxious for tonight. Your mind was racing, eager for the secret, eager to be meeting everybody one on one, eager for... him. You shook your head.

This is for Mirabel, not for him. You pointed a finger at yourself.

Your attention on the time was broken when Gabriel began bounding towards you, taking hold of the guitar. Your mother was close behind him.

"What were you thinking of for dinner, Y/N?" Your mother asked as she set her things down on the kitchen table.

"Oh, actually mamá, I was invited to have dinner with the Madrigals," you happily told her, with the impression she would be glad you were making connections already.

She froze in place, calculating her thoughts. "You're getting close with them, hm?" She asked before continuing her movements, at a much slower pace than before.

"I mean-" You felt confused by her reaction. It wasn't necessarily a bad one, but it certainly was not what you were expecting. "I guess you could say that?" You truthfully told her before tilting your head to the side, leaning forward. You spoke through the sound as Gabriel plucked the strings. "Is there a problem?"

Your mother looked back at you, producing feeble smile, her expression quickly changing from faded to fake excitement.

"No, mija, not at all. Have fun." She said before retreating into another room.

---

You found yourself incessantly tucking stray hairs into your bandana, brushing your skirt and pulling your shirt.

It's just a dinner!  You told yourself in an attempt to counter the nervousness you felt, shyly walking over to the front doors of the Casa Madrigal.

It worked for the most part, the beat of your heart slowing and the tightness in your shoulders relaxing.

Creak.

Never mind.

Your body tensed as someone stood before you, without having the chance to knock.

"Look who it is," Camilo leaned his back against the door, crossing his arms. "What's the password?" He joked in a whisper.

"Salento?" You responded, recalling from the night of the ceremony. He broke out into a grin, like it was 'your little secret' that no one else knew.

"Good answer." He returned your jest before being interrupted by the echoing of Mirabel calling out to him.

"Camilo, quit messing around and let Y/N in!" Her frame entered the doorway, reaching her hand out and pulling you in, almost shoving Camilo out of the way. He threw his hands up while you flew past him. As you grazed Camilo, he shot you a smirk. You smiled back. Adrenaline surged in the air.

Mirabel showed you to the extra spot at the dinner table. You were directly adjacent to her and across from Camilo. The family had greeted you with firm handshakes and half side-hugs.

You watched as the plates of food rolled out in carts on their own, Casita offering portions.

"Everybody, please," Abuela Alma clinked the glass with a small spoon, gathering the attention of the table. She gave usual updates about the town and where the gifts were needed before turning her attention towards you.

"I hope you feel welcomed, Y/N."

You smiled at her words, because you did. You had been here for less than a week, though it already felt like a childhood home. You looked forward to see Camilo, his face decorated with a soft smile. You were sure he took some, if not most of the credit for that. You couldn't say that would be incorrect, though.

The remainder of the dinner wasn't all too different, with friendly questions, unrelated chit-chat amongst the family and Mirabel eager to get upstairs. You and Camilo had shared glances a couple of times, silently laughing as he teased Isabela, who sat next to him.

The moment you were allowed to be excused from the table, Mirabel took your wrist and practically flung you out of your chair.

"Thanks for dinner má gotta run!" She exclaimed with no pauses, rushing you away from the table. You saw Camilo with confused, furrowed brows, hurrying over to you.

"Are we on a time crunch?" He said through breaths, catching up to you.

"Quickly," Mirabel whispered, shoving you and Camilo up the stairs. You looked at each other with puzzled expressions, causing a fit of silent laughter between the two of you.

When you made it into the nursery, she shut the door behind you, nearly slamming it.

"If you're trying to be sneaky, it's not working," Camilo stated the obvious. Mirabel said nothing as she fumbled through the closet.

"Mirabel?" You said, a mix of concern and confusion in your voice. You and Camilo glanced at each other, until seeing the faint glow of green fall upon Mirabel's face. She turned to the two of you, an expression full of worry, but also pride.

"Someone's going to steal the candle."
