(There is not a single comment that is for following the marks, LMAO)
(A/N: These chapters might be shorter than my usual ones given this whole "choose your own adventure thing". Once this little fun arc over, the chapters will go back to being 1000+ words. I hope it makes it a little more interactive, though! I thought it would be fun to try!)
You turned back to examine the marks on the trees one more time before locking in your decision to leave that path behind.
There was no way you could leave Camilo, him being tied up and being brought to God knows where. As long as you followed them quietly enough, stealthily enough, maybe you could get him out of there.
You waited another few seconds before making your way up the changed path, following their tail.
As you lunged up the treacherous incline, feeling the beads of sweat beginning to form on the edges of your hairline, you realized something. An overwhelming, overpowering feeling.
You were hungry.
You hadn't eaten for 24 hours, mixed with the trauma that was done to your body by being put to sleep. Then on top of that, walking for hours? Your body was so pumped up on adrenaline that you didn't seem to notice that it had felt as if your stomach was eating itself alive from the inside.
You weren't sure how much longer you could keep going.
Where were they taking him?
You knew you could not back down, not now. You had to keep going. For Camilo, and for yourself.
And so, you continued on, taking hold of stray branches as support in order to will yourself to move forward.
There were not many turns in their voyage, mostly going on in the straightest line they could in the densely packed forest.
At this point, the sky was jet-black. The stars were concealed by the trees that engulfed everything around you. On the upside, it was easier to see and follow the flame. On the downside, you couldn't see very well in directly front of you, and being extra careful meant being extra slow. You simply went with the flow, praying you would not trip or draw attention to yourself.
You found yourself beginning to get closer to the wagon, much closer than necessary. You stopped in your tracks, wondering why you were moving so fast. That was, until you realized, it was not you who moved fast. They had simply stopped.
You didn't move a muscle, not even a hush could be heard. You watched the flame move as the two passengers hopped off and walked in another direction into the forest.
You looked over at the wagon, presuming Camilo was still in there.
You could make a run for it, checking if Camilo is in the wagon and attempting to get him to a hiding spot in time. Although, you didn't know how much time you had left before they were to come back.
On the other hand, you could stay put, awaiting the two unknown bodies to get back to the wagon to begin following them once they started moving again. Although, you weren't sure where they were going, or how long the journey would take.
What should you do?
Check for Camilo
Stay put
