"So I may or may not have talked to your father beforehand." He says in a monotone voice.
What the-
I stand up with anger radiating all over me and say "What!? What do you mean? What do you mean you talked to my father?
"First you sit down, this is going to be a long long conversation" he utters.
"Heck no, this isn't the time to calm down, Xavier Romano you better open up before I open up your limbs that too without any freaking anaesthesia"
His eyes widen at my words and amateur threat and mockingly he nods as he ushers me to sit down.
"So, your father is a retired government officer right?" He says looking at me straight.
How does he know?- again it won't impossible for him considering his reputation.
"Yeah" I utter vaguely.
"So have you ever wondered what he does? Like what does his job revolve for him to do?"
"What do you mean? He was in the finance department, the head specifically of the political party"
He shakes his head in both sides indicating no and further says " yeah that was the initial start, except your first part is wrong he wasn't any finance head but he was-"
Are you serious right now? Am I supposed to believe him over my own dad? My own blood? He must be cracking nuts right now.
"Then what was he?" I ask leaning in.
"Are you sure you can handle this right now?"
This dude.... I swear I'll end up strangling him. "Xavier WHAT.WAS.HIS.JOB?" Gritting my teeth I utter the words.
"Your father was a senior officer at the National bureau of Central Intelligence Agency"
"What did you say? Can you repeat it again?" I ask holding the handle of the sofa for support.
"He was a senior officer Eliza, an undercover one not even your mother knows about it, you knowing it will only bring danger to your way"
Holy Sh- , all this while he had been lying to us? To his own family?
Suddenly the image of a perfect family begins to shatter in front of my eyes and slips away from my grasp.
Eliza, it was for your own good. Not that I would go telling around anyone but it's good that I didn't know.
Or else I would forever be in the fear of losing my father.
"Does he used to kill people? Like you do?" I ask him meekly losing all my confidence.
"No, Lord No. Eliza what do you think a national Bureau means? It is especially made to hunt down animals like Thomas and other vultures out there, your dad was the department head in the theory department, he was responsible for planning the execution to catch the criminals"
Hold up. Is he speaking way to fast.. or am I just processing his words way to slow?
"Xavier stop, stop. I need a to get a grip, what you're saying is that the national bureau isn't just another cover for mafia events?"
"No Eliza. There's a reason it's called national, are you okay?"
"No I am not okay Xavier. My head is spinning from your words"
He nods at me and pours me a glass of water and opens a satchel of glucose and mixes it with a spoon
"Here you have this meanwhile I'll tell you some more details if that's what you want?"
I take the glass from his hand and gulp it down in one shot. "If all this is so secretive then how come you know about this?" I ask him knowing the answer.
"I mean cmon, you're asking me this? 'Me? I have strings who will gladly tell me anything I want, that is if they want to keep their heads to themselves"
I nod at him and process the words.
"So what exactly was your conversation with my father?" I ask him coming back to the point.
"So as I was saying he is an ex secret member of the bureau, he got to know about Thomas before I did, so he contacted me to assure your safety from Thomas"
Say what now? My father? Contacted him? To assure my safety? He contacted an assassin? Something isn't adding up, and I know Xavier isn't telling me the entire story, I must find out anyhow.
I ignore my thoughts and say "so he agreed for the marriage? Just like that?"
"No. Ofcourse not. At first he said he is going to kill me, for even thinking like that" he says in a joyful manner.
Thank lord! Atleast he threatened him or else I thought why in the heavens would my father agree to a marriage with a person like Xavier?
"So then what happened?"
He nods and says "but when he realised Thomas isn't willing to back off he agreed for a contract, and said whatever you agree on he'll agree on, it isn't his or my choice to control your life"
A sense of release passes over me as my tensed muscles began to relax.
So the steering was still in my hands, I just had to choose where to pull the brakes.
