Summer Love

Chapter 11

Lucas's POV

(5 minutes before the end of Chapter 10)

"So, what about your father?" I ask.

"Well," she sighs, "He took off, when I was a baby. He found another woman, and they started a whole other family. I never saw him again."

"Oh, Maya," I say, putting my hand on her arm. It must be hard to not have a father. I don't exactly have one right now, but at least I know he still loves me.

"So, do you have more in common with me than you thought?" I ask. Maybe this will be what ties us together, finally.

"I do," she answers.

I throw my hands up in the air. "Finally, you admit it!"

She giggles. I lean in to hug her as she does the same. Then the door flings open and Ms. Hart is leaping at me.

I look up just in time to move out of the way, and she lands on the bed next to her daughter.

(Where chapter 10 leaves off)

"What were you thinking? Don't get married at your age! I mean, I know how much you like him, but seriously, what the heck, Maya?"

Maya's eyes fill with tears as she looks at her mother. "You completely ruined a great moment! Finally I found something we have in common, and you just have to barge right in and make it one of your famous Mama Bear protecting her little baby moments! Well get this, I'm not a baby anymore, okay? I'm 14! Lucas didn't even know I liked him, and you just had to go and tell him and make it all about you! Just like always." Maya ran out of the room.

We all stood there, stunned. Then Ms. Hart started to speak, wiping her hands on her waitress dress, which she wore even though she wasn't going to work. 

"What have I done?" she sighed, putting her hands over her face. 

Farkle, Riley and I stare at each other. I want to help Ms. Hart, but my mind is on one thing only.

Maya likes me.
