Maya's POV
I can't sleep. I can't stop thinking about Lucas. Sure, my dad is, well, gone, but I wasn't sad because he left us on purpose. It didn't hurt to lose him when I never really had him in the first place.
But Lucas's dad is one of the most important people in his life. Lucas has told me so much about him. Hoedowns, bull rides, even just sledding down a snow-covered hill. It's obvious they really love each other, and I can't stand to see my golden boy sad.
I figure Lucas will be up, too, so I head towards his room. Maybe we can talk, and maybe I can help him feel better.
Before I reach the door, I see a blonde woman, not much taller than me, waiting outside the door. "Mom?" I whisper. But I must be too quiet because she doesn't turn around.
My mom sticks her hand through the door and drops something- I'm guessing paper because it doesn't make much of a sound- onto the floor. She turns and exits the hall without even noticing I'm standing there. I lean against the wall. Knowing Lucas, he's bound to investigate when he sees the note drop. I'm right about that.
Lucas opens the door and scans the tiny hallway. His eyes flicker towards the wall where I'm leaning and I hold my breath. He doesn't see me though, and he goes back in to his room.
I let go of my breath, and slide over to the outside of his door.
I hear him mumbling softly. I guess he's reading the note. At one point the quiet talking stops. Then I hear sniffles. Then heavy breathing, full with sobs. Then some higher-pitched sobs.
I realize some of the crying is me. I cover my mouth, but it's too late.
The door opens and I see Lucas, teary-eyed, staring at me.
