Chapter 21

Maya's POV

Lucas leans toward me, his eyes closed. I do the same. I can't believe this is finally happening.

His lips touch mine and I stop breathing. I feel his hands in my hair and I put mine in his. But this doesn't feel like a girlfriend-boyfriend lets just do this to look like a couple kind of kiss. It's better than that.

He pulls away and just stares at me with a quick and faraway smile. He's got this, for lack of a better word, adorkable half-grin on his face. I'd imagine I do too.

I think we're both just caught up in the moment, smiling at each other. But then we once again realize where we are: a hospital, with Lucas's father's body. Not his inner self though; that's already moved on to a better, more beautiful place, where he won't have to be in pain anymore. Hopefully he's watching us.

Hopefully he's smiling too.

Topanga opens the door. Everyone else follows. I remember why we're here, and my heart fills with sadness. This must be so hard for Lucas.

Lucas stands up. He's crying. But not as hard as I thought he'd be.

Lucas's POV

I kissed Maya. Maya kissed me.

My dad is dead. He's not here anymore.

But the little girl he saw and he met and he loved and I love is still here. Maya Penelope Hart. The girl I never knew I liked so much.

Topanga wraps her arm around me and sobs into my shoulder. Soon we're all hugging and crying. Through my tears, I look around in wonder. None of these people even met my father, but they'll cry for him just the same.

Riley's POV

Last night Lucas's father died. I tried to explain it to Auggie, who immediately smiled at the news. "Why are you happy?" I asked.

"Because now Mrs. Svorski has company!" he exclaimed.

I guess she does.

Farkle's POV

We're going back home tomorrow. I don't want this trip to be over! But I guess I'm a little homesick, too. There's one thing I still want to do before we go home though...
