Chapter 13

Lucas's POV

I'm starting to worry about Maya. Where is she?

A few minutes later she appears, red cheeked, with Mr. Feeny following behind her. She walks over to me. "I've got to talk to you, Ranger Rick," she says, taking my hand and pulling me aside. I look to Feeny for advice. He winks and gives me a thumbs up.

"What is it, Maya?" I ask. She opens her mouth to speak, then closes it.

"Maya?" I ask. She blinks.

"Sorry Sundance, just got a little nervous there," she replies, using yet another of her fabulous nicknames for me.

"Woah, the unbreakable Maya is scared?" I tease. She smiles, tight-lipped.

"Do you like me?" she asks.

Whoa. Okay, I wasn't expecting that.

"Yes," I say surely. Then I cover my mouth. Why did I tell her. But maybe this'll be good...?

"Do you like me, Maya?" I ask, looking into her eyes.

She begins to speak, but then a short, blond woman comes over. "Hey, Maya! And you must be Lucas, right?" she says.

"Yes, Ma'am," I reply politely. But I want to scream for her to go so Maya will answer my question.

"Let's all go inside, everyone is looking for you!" She says. Then she turns, and sees Mr. Feeny sitting there.

"Feeny?" She asks.

"Yes, yes, it's me," he replies, pulling her into a hug.

I look over at Maya to see if she'll answer now. I can tell she's thinking hard because she twirls her hair tightly around her finger.

She turns to me. "Luacs, I-" she begins, but is interrupted by my phone, which beeps in my pocket. I pull it out. It's a text from my mama.

Mrs. Friar: Lucas, call me. It's about your dad

My heart sinks to my shoes.
