Riley's POV
The bell rings and I scramble to get out of my seat. "Remember to do your summer reading assignments!" my dad, who in school is known as "Mr. Matthews", says. He knows we won't.
"Wait up, Maya!" I yell, running after my blond best friend. She walks out the door and down the hallway, the heels on her black leather boots clicking against the floor. We're both going to my house today, and Mr. Minkus is driving Farkle and Lucas over as well.
Maya opens her locker, swinging her backpack over her shoulder. "Ready, Riles?" she asks.
I nod, taking off my jacket. It's surely feeling like summertime here in New York, warm and sunny. I skip out the door. The older kids look at me strange.
Well, they can look all they want, I'll still be smiley riley. Summer break usually just means watching Mr. Googley marathons with Auggie, but this summer we're doing something special: going on a road trip.
Grandma and Grandpa Matthews live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and we're going to visit them and Uncle Josh. Then off to see Aunt Morgan and her boyfriend, and Uncle Eric and his moose.
As I stroll along the streets of NYC, Maya and I just chat and laugh together like always. Maya can always make me laugh. I can make her laugh too, most of the time.
Eventually, as always, the talk turns to boys.
"So, what's going on with you and Lucas?" I ask. She laughs.
"Or with you and Farkle?" She asks back. We giggle.
I like Farkle. She likes Lucas. We both know that. But no one else does.
I arrive back at the house, sweaty from the sun. My mom greets me and Maya at the door. Lucas and Farkle are in there with her, and they wave.
"Oh girls!" Mom exclaims. "I just got off the phone with your father. He had some exciting news!"
We walk inside. "What?" Maya asks.
My mom smiles. "Maya, Lucas, Farkle, how would you like to go on our summer road trip with us?"
