Chapter 14

Maya's POV

Lucas likes me. Lucas likes me. Lucas likes me.

Morgan was asking us about something but I can't hear her. Then Lucas turns and asks me the same thing I had just asked him. "Do you like me?"

"Lucas, I-" I start to say. Then his phone beeps. Dang it! I was actually going to tell him this time!

His face goes white. He furiously dials a number into his phone. "Mama?" he asks. I hear the faint sound of a woman's voice in the background. A single tear forms in Lucas's eye. He nods, faster and faster, over and over.

"Yes. I will. I love you too," Lucas cries before hanging up.

I stare at him, wide-eyed. "Lucas?" I ask. He looks up in tears.

"Maya," he says. His voice sounds far away and fragile. I pull him into a hug.

"It's okay," I say. "It's okay." We stay like that for a while.

"He's not doing well, Maya," Lucas says finally. "Mama says he started complaining that his chest was hurting and he kept waking up shouting and hollering for her, and me. She says the doctors checked him out and said it's worse and there's not much time left."

I stroke his hair gently. "Lucas," I start. But what is there to say? I hold him some more. "Is there anything I can do?"

He breaths deeply. "Just keep being the Maya I love," he says, with the faintest of smiles.

I blush. It feels like only a minute, but we must have been standing there for a while because Riley runs out from Morgan's house, looking frantic. "Where the heck are they?" she wonders aloud.

She breaks out into a mile-wide grin when she sees us.

"Yay!" she screams. "Yay yay yay yay yay!" She jumps up and down like a two year old. "Laya! Oh my gosh yes!"

I mentally slap my forehead. "Riley," I say in a warning tone.

"Yessie?" she replies, a grin on her face.

"His dad's dying," I whisper. Her eyes get wide.

"Lucas!" she says, giving him a quick hug.

He nods slightly and puts his hands over his face.

"I'm getting Daddy," Riley says.

"What could he help with," I sigh. Then a lightbulb goes off in my head. "Wait, Riles?" I say.

"Yeah?" she replies.

"How fast do you think we can drive to Texas?"

Riley smiles. I smile. Lucas perks up a little.

She runs off to alert Mr. Matthews.
