The wind was blowing on the island, Outer Banks, the birds happily chirping as morning came to the island, the sun slowly rising to wake everyone who was still sleeping awake and ready for the day. The crickets were chirping in the tall grass, not seeming to notice the saddened group of teenagers that were in the backyard of the Chateau. The sounds of wood being chopped added to the chirps of the birds and crickets and the crashing waves of the ocean just down below the house.
Pope Heyward held an axe in his hand as he used it to get some of the wood off, a smooth surface soon being found on the other side. The boy was able to create the smooth surface into a heart before he placed himself beside his twin sister, Y/n Heyward who stood in-between him and their best friend, Kiara, or Kie, Carrera. As he did that, their other best friend, JJ Maybank ventured to the tree, a blowtorch and a metal tool in hand.
On one end of the tool, the piece was burnt a bit from the blowtorch as it met with the smooth surface of the tree trunk, creating letters for their memorial they were making for their best friend who had died out in sea with someone that was to become their best friend. The memorial said, '2003-2020, John B Routledge, P4L'. Eventually, when he was finished, JJ placed himself on the other side of Kiara.
"To John B." JJ says, holding out his drink of alcohol.
"And to Sarah." Kie quietly adds.
The boys of the four lift up their drinks before they take a gulp of them. When they finished that, Y/n stepped forward towards the small hole her and Kiara had dug up earlier, a box of their best friend's belongings inside. The Heyward girl places it inside the hole as the other three crouch down, helping her bury the box. John B Routledge and Sarah Cameron weren't able to have an actual funeral, so this is what they decided to do instead.
"Here's a fun fact. You ready? Here we go. Everyone you know... will die. And by everyone, I mean everyone. Your mother, brother, sister, father. All your friends. And all your enemies. Everyone. I mean, of course, there's another way of looking at it. Since it's all so short and over so quickly... that makes everything meaningful. Everything's just one time."

The occasional honks of boats could be heard outside the window of Y/n's bedroom. The bright sun was up, shining into her window as the blinds were open. The bed was neatly made as it always was. On her desk by the window, papers laid all around, some being for school that happened to be the next day. Some were just stuff that she knew she'd need for school the following day. On the wall, pictures were on a pin board, most being pictures of her and the Pogues but some hidden far back, her boyfriend could be seen in some of them.
At the moment, Y/n standing in the middle of her room, headphones in her ears as the music drummed through her eardrums. A pile of clothes laid in her arms as she was putting them away, some in her dresser and hanging some up in her closet. The girl wore a hoodie with a pair of shorts, her socks sliding against the hardwood floor. Her hair was down and over her shoulders, unlike what it usually was as she had her hair up most times.
The girl didn't even notice the knocking on her window, or the sound of someone coming in until a hand touched her shoulder. At the feeling, the Heyward girl lets out a scream of fear, spinning around and swinging her hand forward, landing a punch on whoever had grabbed her shoulder. Her eyes widened, however, upon seeing it was her boyfriend who had stumbled back, clutching his nose a bit.
"Rafe?" Y/n mumbles, taking her earbuds out.
Rafe Cameron lets out a slight groan, hand still clutching his nose a bit before he got himself straight, shaking it out while releasing his hand from his face. Blue eyes fluttering open, a small smile comes onto his face, trying not to chuckle at her wide eyed look. Despite him despising John B Routledge, Rafe wanted to be there for his girlfriend, knowing she was grieving over the loss of her best friend. Just as he opens his mouth to speak, the sound a knock coming from the other side of her bedroom door was heard.
"Y/n, sweetheart? Are you alright?" The voice of her mother questions from the other side.
As quick as she could, Y/n grabbed her boyfriend by the shoulders, turning him to face her closet and the next thing Rafe knew, he was shoved inside, the door closing behind him. Stepping away from the closet and quickly seating herself on her bed, crossing her legs just as her door opens, revealing Mrs. Heyward slowly walking in with a concerned expression.
"Hey, I heard you scream. Is everything okay?" Mrs. Heyward asks, walking further into the room.
Y/n nods, playing with her fingers nervously. "Oh, yeah. Everything's fine, it's just... I had a... nightmare."
"Was it about..." Mrs. Heyward begins but trails off as she seats herself beside her daughter.
"No. No, it wasn't about that. It was... something else." Y/n lies, shaking her head. "It's not that important, anyway."
"Are you sure?" Mrs. Heyward questions, receiving a nod. "Why don't we go out? We'll go get lunch, maybe shopping. Maybe bring something back for the boys. What do you say? Sound good?"
Y/n smiles, nodding. "Yeah, sounds great, Mom."
"Alright. We'll leave in a bit." Mrs. Heyward tells her, standing up to her feet. "And Y/n?"
"Yeah, Mom?" Y/n murmurs.
"If you need anything, I'm here for you, honey. And so is your dad, and your brother." Mrs. Heyward informs, making the girl smile. "I love you."
"Love you too, Mom." Y/n calls back.
And with that, Mrs. Heyward exits her daughter's room, closing the door behind her. Hearing the sigh that left his girlfriend's mouth, Rafe exits the closet, dusting himself off a bit and getting the wrinkles out of his clothes, not like he really cared much anyway.
"You've been having nightmares?" Rafe asks with a frown.
Y/n shrugs. "Just a bit. There not too serious."
"They sound serious enough that your mom knows about them." Rafe argues, seating himself beside her.
"Rafe, it's fine. I'm fine." Y/n assures, though she sounded a bit hesitant.
Still frowning, the Cameron boy leans forward and wraps his arms around her, pulling her close to him. Y/n immediately cuddled against his chest, feeling him place a kiss on top of her head. It was times like this where Rafe wasn't thinking about his dad to love him when he was with the only person he's ever loved in his entire life. Y/n Heyward was and is the love of his life, and despite her being a Pogue and him a Kook, nothing will ever change that.
