Alfie Solomons, the crime boss of Camden Town and King of the Jews: estranged from his wife, his empire crumbling and ravaged by war, he makes a deal with the devil, and nothing is the same again.
Covering his years of involvement with the Birmingha...
The rickety staircase creaked underfoot. Reaching the doorway Alfie noticed a tram ticket was jammed in the pushke donation box. Tugging it free, Alfie pocketed it, and went inside.
It wasn't the Hampstead Synagogue which was more to Malka's taste, but, to Alfie, the shtiebel was honest. He felt more at home in the modest room that smelt of onions and damp wool which drifted up the stairs and got trapped.
"Avraham ben Sofia, aleha ha-shalom," smiled Reb Mendel Kahan.
Hat low or collar up, it never mattered, the Rabbi had known Alfie since 1908. There was no hiding.
"The goat sorted?" asked Alfie in a lowered voice.
"Yes," replied the Rabbi with a polite nod, "The shochet on Ridley Road, Yosel, says a goat is ready. He'll do the shechita tomorrow."
With a nod, Alfie pulled a leather wallet from his coat, and retrieving some notes, placed them on the table.
"For the goat, but no shechita," said Alfie.
"But--"
"No buts," interrupted Alfie lifting more notes between them.
The Rabbi's eyes shifted to the money.
"This is for the paupers' seder," Alfie said.
"Baruch Hashem. I'll speak of you on Shabbos--"
Alfie shook his head, silencing the Rabbi.
"No. No fuss. No shechita and keep my name out. Anonymous. Nu?" said Alfie, giving the notes in hand a little shake.
After a moment, the Rabbi nodded, "For ma'ot chittim, anonymous. Understood."
Alfie set the extra notes down, gave a final nod, and turned for the stairs. On the way out he dropped a coin in the pushke.
