"Why're you leaving so early, princess?" A snide voice inquired from behind me and with my neck hairs standing upright, I turned on my heels.

I was ready to throw a punch as soon as I'd came face to face with the low-life, but when I saw him I froze. White hair, pale face, he looked like someone I'd tried hard to forget, I shook my head. Suddenly he had black locks and coffee colored skin, making me thoroughly question my own sanity. The grip around my wrist tightened as he pulled me closer. It was like I was watching myself as an outsider, screaming to move, fight or do anything at all, but not listening.

My knees started shaking and I could feel the pressure building behind my eyes. How pathetic, I thought, I'm supposed to be a Ranger, a protector of the land. But I'd turned into a little girl the minute I saw a ghost.

"Nothing to say, huh?" The man grinned as he brought his face close to mine, baring his rotten yellow teeth. His foul scent burned deep into my nose, the smell of alcohol and weeks of not bathing was a bit too much for the poor thing. It made me even angrier and thus even more helpless. I closed my eyes and swallowed thickly, silently wishing Gilan would never hear or know about this moment.

Slowly, I moved my free hand to my sax knifes, but immediately that hand was confiscated too. "Tut tut," he shook his head and frowned, "you won't be needing that."

I threw a hasty look over my shoulder, but my brother nor the tall red-haired man were anywhere to be found. When I focused on the situation at hand again, a small group had formed around us. All equally big and rough-looking. Normally I wouldn't have hesitated if I could take them all in a fight. I scanned the men in the group, yes they were big, but most importantly most of them didn't have any armor on, which was a big mistake. I would be able to kill any of them with two quick moves, maybe three if I were tired.

As I was observing my chances and calculating how I'd get out, I faintly heard the tavern door open with a loud creak. Some men shortly turned their heads to see the newcomer, but with the wall of men around me I couldn't have if I'd tried. They started hurriedly murmuring and moving out as the steps came closer. The tight grip around my wrists was starting to hurt, making me clench my jaw.

"Is there a problem gentlemen?" A familiar male voice asked, which immediately made me pull my hands back.

Fear struck the tan man's features when he noticed the figure in the green-grey cloak. Gilan folded his arms and stared at him with an ice-cold look. The man hesitated, before deciding on the dumbest decision he could've made.

"This is a personal matter, Ranger," he spat, "it doesn't concern you."

My mentor shook his brown-curls and sucked in a breath while chuckling joylessly. The man was looking around and laughing with his mates, when the tall Ranger lunged forward without a warning and hit the bandit in his stomach with a quick but effective punch. The man doubled over groaning and slowly slid onto the dirty tavern floor.

Soon there was another ruffian who thought he could take on a full-fledged Ranger, but within mere seconds he laid on the ground as well. More and more of the men tried, they thrusted forwards with one fist raised the other somewhere at the height of their hips, fully confident that their body mass would make up for their lack of training. Their defeats varied, one time Gilan would knee them, the other moment he'd duck under their arm and throw them on the floor. Trouble came when one of his victims that laid on the floor, decided to kick him right in his left thigh. He flinched and grimaced, quickly flinging his throwing knife into the man's shoulder as payback. But most of the men had already noticed the weakness and I could see their eyes glowing with new found eager.

Out of reflex I ran up to the opponent closest to my mentor, and I grabbed his fist, turned it, then hooked my legs around the guy's neck, forcing him to the ground with a loud crash. All of the fighting with the others suddenly came naturally, I didn't know what had come over me, because just moments before I'd frozen like a bunny on the road. After a few minutes everyone in the tavern, excluding the hostess who'd been cleaning wooden pints behind her counter the whole time, laid on the floor, groaning heavily.

"Just a regular Thursday night," I overheard her mumbling to herself.

I went up to Gilan who'd been standing behind me, looking increasingly worse by the minute. I wrapped an arm around his waist and put his arm around my shoulders for him to lean on.

"That was so stupid, why'd you do that?!" I yelled at him after the heavy oak door had fallen closed behind us.

"You weren't back yet," he told me softly, suddenly holding on even tighter than before, "I thought something had happened."

I glanced over to him, ready to be angry, but when I saw his face I decided against it. It was a mixture of pain and most importantly young shame. The kind of shame you see in a child who's done something wrong.

"If you trained me ri-" I started, but Gilan abruptly cut me off and freed himself from my grip.

"Yeah! I know, I just need to trust my own training!" He gulped while gesturing wildly, before he turned to face me, "but I don't, all right? I worry about you and I have to make sure you're safe."

A hot blush crept up my cheeks as I locked eyes with him. If he was worried about me it would mean he cared about me right?

I sighed and rubbed my arms, the cool night air cutting at them. "I am now, thanks to you."

His green eyes focused on mine and I could feel my stomach tie itself into a knot. A fluttering exploded when he took a step closer, allowing me to feel his breath on my face...
