Sofia's POV

I find myself walking away from Maddy, who was desperately trying to distract herself from Nate, while he was making out with some random girl, by dancing with some random guy. I've been texting Rue since the party started but I haven't received a response. I hope she's not ducking me because she already relapsed. Knowing Rue, I wouldn't be surprised. But she should know that I would be the last person to judge her with my alcohol problem.

It all started when I got with Devin. Not only did he help cause my alcohol problem, but he encouraged it because he "likes me" when I'm drunk. I like me when I'm drunk too, but not for the same reasons as Devin.

I stumble over to the hallway, finally spotting Rue who seemed completely out of it. How the hell did I know she would end up like this on her first night of freedom?

"I see rehab didn't do much for ya huh" I joked with her, slurring my words already. "Nahh. Glad to see your still caught up in your drinking problems. Almost makes my drug addiction feel justified" she said bluntly. "Damn" I chuckled at her dark sense of humor.

I like talking to Rue. She is the least judgmental person I ever met, and by far the most easygoing. Mostly because she had no room to talk about anybody else's life. She has problems of her own and she knows that I do too. That was the unspoken thing between us. I stay out of her business, and she stays out of mine because we both know how hard it is to leave our addictions alone. I understood hers and she understood mine. I knew all of her, the parts that everyone else overlooked. To the rest of the world, she was just a drug addict.

To the rest of the world, I was Maddy's alcoholic sister. But not to Rue. The best part about talking with her is that she can disappear for a month straight and come back to finish the same conversation we left off before she left. Like nothing ever changed. That's why she's my long-term best friend.

We made our way over to the couch, catching up on bullshit while she sparked a blunt for the two of us to share. Being cross faded is one of my favorite feelings, but I know that I've already had way too much to drink. That wasn't gonna stop me though.

I started to wonder where my boyfriend was, he was supposed to show up a few hours ago. I checked my phone to see that he texted me about 20 minutes ago, telling me that he was gonna be working late again. Devin always has an excuse when I want to see him. But god forbid he wants to see me and I say no to him.

"Rue, what the fuck"  a husky deep voice entered the conversation. I look up to see the man who Rue was speaking with earlier today at the corner store before Nate pulled off. Now that he is directly in front of us, I got the chance to look at him closely. Take in all his facial features. He looks... interesting. Dresses different than the boys who go to our school, and noticeably a few years older. I wonder how Rue knows this guy.

"what, what, what, what?" Rue asks with a deep tone of sarcasm, my eyes not leaving his face as he sits down on the couch next to Rue.

"C'mon now bruh you owe me 120 bucks" he said to her. Wow already? Rehab really must have been pointless for her.

"My bad bruh I forgot" she told him, passing him the blunt. "Shit, you know I ain't trippin" he responded, taking a long hit. His eyes finally met mine. I've never seen someone with eyes like his, a deep blue that sent shivers down my spine. Rue sat between him and I, zoned out to the max. He looked back at me, not looking away this time.

"Are you a friend of Rue's?" he asks in a calm voice, and I swear I caught him look down at my lips. "The best one" I respond, very drunk.

"Best friend huh... make sure Rue isn't doing anything too stupid, she just got out of rehab." he told me sincerely. "I'm fully aware" I slur my words a bit, taking another sip of my E&J. He notices this and passes me the blunt instead, letting me hit it a few times instead of drowning myself in alcohol.
