Sofia's POV

Maddy avoided me and everyone else when she came home the night of the carnival. I'm not sure what happened, but the look on her face tells me something happened between her and Nate. She was trying her best to cover up and she walked to her room that night and I gave her the space she wanted.

On Monday, Maddy passed out in class during first period. She was taken away by paramedics and I was trying to find out what was wrong with her. Jules got pulled to the principal's office later in the day. So did Nate, along with multiple other students. When they pulled me, I was the one asking questions.

Considering that I was away from her the entire night of the carnival, I was curious as to what happened with my sister. "Your sister has extensive bruising and there are multiple eyewitnesses saying that Nate Jacobs strangled her" he tells me. I swallow a lump in my throat and see Maddy wearing a hoodie in the room next to me. She looked at me through the glass and held a finger up to her mouth, inplying that I don't say anything.

Even though I could punch Nate in the face right now, I respected my sister's wishes and didn't give them any information. "I don't know what you're talking about, I wasn't with her at the carnival. I was hanging out with someone else who also gave me a ride home. Maddy hasn't said much to me since then, she's been in her room. I didn't know that's why she wore a hoodie to school" I explain to the principal. He apologizes for what happened to my sister and sent me back to class.

Maddy: mom is pressing fucking charges

me: why didn't you tell me about what happened

She didn't respond, so I assumed they were talking to her down in the office still. I noticed my mom was also in the office when I walked back to class and I heard her talking about pressing charges.

Maddy and Nate were both taken to the station for further questioning that day and once we got home from school, I rolled a blunt and barged into Maddy's room. "Maddy" I said, crossing my arms. "What" she said with her face down in the pillow. "Are you gonna keep moping around or do you wanna smoke with me?" I asked. She looked up at me, then looked down at the blunt. "Bitch..."

10 minutes later, we were stoned and she had finally let my dog chill on her bed with us. "So like... are you gonna tell me what happened with Nate?" I asked. She explained to me what happened with the chili stand, and in turn, I told her about the discovery I made between Nate's dad and Jules. "Are you fucking kidding me, that's insane" she says. "Yeah, but Jules told me and Rue that she actually lied about her age to him at school today" I confirmed.

"God, their whole fucking family is so weird" she says, taking another hit from the blunt before putting it out in the ashtray. "I can't believe I wasn't there when you knocked the chili over" I laughed. "Yeah, that shit was hilarious" she said. We were quiet for a while and then she spoke up again.

"Remember the dicks in his phone I was telling you about?" she says. "Yeah..." I respond. "I confronted him about it after he choked me. He didn't even have a fucking explanation, he just told me to trust him and to keep it to myself. Can you believe that?" I shook my head. "If you ask me, he's definitely gay" I said to her, getting up from her bed.

"That would actually be hilarious" she told me. "You know what's funny?" I say, crossing my arms. "Mom is pressing charges against Nate, but the second Devin puts his hands on me-" "I know bitch, fucking tell me about it. That's called favoritism." she says. "Who is she favoring?" I ask curiously. "Devin, duh. Definitely not you. If she was on your side, she would've pressed charges against Devin a long time ago. I mean seriously, you don't even want to be with him. I actually want to be with Nate and now she's keeping me away from him. It's not fair. It's like she actually fucking hates us." she complains. "I wish we could trade places too, trust me" I tell her. Being in my shoes wasn't easy either.
