When The Leaves Fall

Felix rushed to rearrange the picnic blanket one last time as he saw Jupiter's car pull into the small parking lot next to the hill that he was sitting on. The large tree behind him was where he'd ask Jupiter to come, sending them a text with the location of it and a date and time. All he'd said was that he wanted to show them something and thankfully they hadn't asked questions and had simply sent him an 'I'll be there'. Felix was so happy when Tarla sent him a text saying her mom had a portable keyboard that he could use, so setting it up was fairly easy. Felix hadn't really given himself time to make a lyric sheet or anything, he was just going to sing the song for them. The one he'd written for them.

"Hey, what's up?" Jupiter yelled as they climbed up the hill. "What was it that you wanted to show me? It was very vague- woah what's all this?"

"A picnic, but that's not what I wanted to show you," Felix grinned at them, his nerves calming as soon as he saw their face.

"Oh?" they asked, sitting down next to where Felix was standing. "Does what you want to show me have anything to do with that giant keyboard over there?"

"Maybe," Felix laughed, grinning at them. He moved towards the keyboard, sitting down on the ground with the keyboard in his lap, his lyric book open on his right.

"Umm, so I don't talk about it really but I write original music? And this one's for you? And it's called 'When The Leaves Fall'," Felix said slowly. He placed his fingers on the keys, gently pressing the first chord.

"I listen to our song on repeat," Felix started, his voice soft, barely louder than the sound of the keyboard. "You're the only reason I can still fall asleep/ Falling through the darkness looking for anybody/ Until you switched on the light for me." The first verse was smooth and gentle, keeping a fast pace, and this continued into the start of the second verse.

"The leaves oh they are falling/ Red-orange and yellow are all around me/ And I wasn't really watching/ Until you made me see." As the second verse moved the music started to get slightly louder, building up towards the chorus, but also slowing down as he approached the chorus, "You make me stop/ And wait/ And watch/ When the leaves fall."

Between the chorus and the next verse, the music started to become similar to the beginning, and Felix glanced at Jupiter, seeing them smiling at him, their eyes wide. "It was like an empty feeling/ Love, whatever that meant/ It was like I was kneeling/ When all I needed was to stand up," Felix sang softly. "And you, lent a hand to me/ For me, to finally see/ What those three words really meant/ And I love you like you love me." Felix let the music build up and between the verse, he said quickly, "I love you fit better than I like you so I went with that instead." Jupiter just laughed, nodding.

"You made me stop/ And wait/ And watch/ When the leaves fall." Felix grinned as he moved into his final verse. "Suddenly all those songs make sense/ Like something finally clicked/ And you're always in my head/ And I never want to forget." Felix turned to face them entirely, not even glancing at his book anymore." Cause You made me stop/And wait/ And watch/ When the leaves fall." He slowed down, the music slowly stopping. "When the leaves fall."

"That was," Jupiter stopped, their eyes wide, "that was beautiful." Their voice was soft as they spoke, their head tilted slightly to the side. "The lyrics? And the melody? And the way they worked together, how it sped up and slowed down and how you were practically a part of the song. Just all of it."
