The First Verse

Felix glanced at his phone seeing it buzz continuously on the table. He set down his pencil, ignoring the homework he was doing and unlocked it. The group chat with his friends was blowing up.

Felix
...

Felix shook his head, whatever. His phone buzzed and he glanced down expecting another message on the group chat and instead saw a notification on his calendar. It was already 2:30, and he'd have to leave by 2:45 to get there on time. He stood in front of his mirror, glancing at his white Conan Gray merch hoodie and the dark blue jeans. He smiled, Conan Gray was superior. He grabbed his satchel, quickly shoving his laptop along with his papers and notebook from physics into it. He glanced at his phone, 2:38. He pulled the first pair of socks that he saw onto his feet knowing his sister would wanna talk to him before he left. He pulled them down, and smiled seeing the pink purple and blue of the bi flag. He'd grabbed the pair he'd worn to pride last year.

Felix pulled his satchel over his shoulder and rushed down the stairs towards the kitchen. When he walked in he was met with the sight of Dani and his mom. Both of them had flour all over their faces, Dani more than his mom, and were laughing. Felix grinned at the sight of them, walking over towards where the keys were hung on the wall. He grabbed the ones to his car that he'd spent half of a school year and an entire summer earning money for. His moms matched what he'd earned and then on his sixteenth birthday, they'd gone to get him a car.

"What're you guys making?" He asked, an amused grin on his face as he pulled the car keys off of the hook and put them in his pocket.

"Well we were trying to make sugar cookies, but you can see how well that's going," his mom said, laughing. Dani gave him a toothy grin coming towards him to give him a hug. Felix hugged her and when she let go, he noticed the flour on his sweater. Dani was giggling as Felix gave her an exaggerated frown. But soon he was laughing too. His mom helped him dust the flour off as he shook his head.

"I'm gonna go," he said when they'd dusted off the last of the flour.

"For your physics project right?" His mom asked, giving him a smile. "Their name is Jupiter if I'm not wrong?" She said hesitating.

"Yeah, Jupiter," he said, feeling his face heat up, but was glad that his skin didn't turn red when he blushed. She nodded, giving him a knowing smile, as she turned back towards where Dani was attempting to mix the flour again.

"Have fun!" she called, going back towards the cookies, and pulling Dani onto the counter so she could actually reach the bowl.

He walked towards the red car, setting his satchel in the passenger seat, connecting his phone to the aux cord. He played his driving playlist which consisted of Conan Gray, Alec Benjamin, and a few songs that his friends had recommended to him that he'd really liked, you! by LANY being one of them. With the comforting sound of  Conan Gray's voice coming through the speakers, he reached the parking lot near the small coffee shop pretty quickly. He pulled into one of the empty spots, staying in the car for a minute to let the song finish, before picking up his satchel and phone and walking towards the comforting pastel colors of the coffee shop. He pushed open the door, hearing the bell jingle, and walked over towards the tables, taking a seat at an empty one.

He told himself he'd wait for Jupiter to show up before he got himself coffee, and just pulled his laptop out of his satchel, gently setting it on the table. He heard the door to the coffee shop jingle again, and turned towards it, but it wasn't Jupiter. He sighed, it wasn't even three yet. He typed in his password, waiting for the jingle of the door. The door jingled again, and he turned to see Jupiter walk in. He should've known he had nothing to worry about. They sat down across from him, a hesitant smile on their face as they pulled out their own laptop.

"So the best coffee in town huh?" They asked, their smile growing a little. Felix let out a breathy laugh.

"Yeah, just wait till you try some. I swear once you have a cup of coffee here, nowhere else will live up to it." Jupiter only hummed, typing in their password. Before Felix could say anything, a serving lady came up to the two of them, and they ordered their coffees. Felix ordered a mocha like he always did, Jupiter ordering a cappuccino.

"The best coffee that you've ever had- before this one of course- where'd you have it?" Felix asked, tilting his head.

"Boring answer I know, but probably Dunkin Donuts." Felix watched as a strand of hair fell in front of Jupiter's eyes, making them shake their head to push it back.

"Dunkin Donuts?" Felix asked, his eyes wide. "How many places have you had coffee from?"

"Like three," they said, laughing at Felix's open mouthed stare.

"I can't believe this. There's no way- how is it possible-" Felix stopped, shaking his head. "Wow am I glad that we're meeting here. You're about to drink the best coffee you've ever had." They hummed noncommittally. "I'm serious!"

"Ok, I believe you," they laughed.

"Now about this physics project..."

----

The two of them ended up talking and laughing throughout their work on the project. It was almost five when they'd finished, and instead of leaving and going home, they'd ended up staying and talking about everything from movies, to school, to debating how well they'd both do in a zombie apocalypse. Jupiter was easy to talk to. Felix noticed the way their eyes twinkled when they laughed, and instead of pushing their hair back with their fingers, they just whipped their head to push it back when it came in their eyes. Felix squeezed his eyes shut. He'd only met them a little while ago, and honestly he didn't even know anything personal about them, but he couldn't stop thinking about them. When Felix made them laugh, he'd felt his heart race each time. He knew that he got crushes quickly, and he was okay with that. Plus, Jupiter seemed awesome, and even if nothing happened with his crush, he knew that being friends with them would be just as great.

Felix turned towards the piano he'd all but abandoned the last few days. He gently picked up the music book opening it on the stand, and pushed his fingers down on the keys. He had a vague idea of what he wanted the lyrics to feel like. So he let his mind wander into the depth of wherever his lyrics came from, and closed his eyes. The words to the first line came to his mind. Than the second. And then the full first verse was written. He didn't have any more at that moment. But he'd had this song in his notebook for so long, always tweaking the chords and the notes, but never writing a single word. Because none of them had felt right. Until he'd written these four lines. This might be his personal favorite verse out of any he'd written before.
