'You need more than love
to love her,'
the moon whispered.

'What is there more than love?'
I asked.
'Is not love like a barque
that's glowing with white roses
on both sides,
and a seat opposite to the beloved
where only red petals are spread out?'

'You are indeed in love, my friend,'
the moon sent me a moonflower,
'but look at this flower.
Can you tell me how much
in love it is?
Its petals are turning red
as I gaze at it.
Love annihilates you
just like it does to my
favourite flowers.'

'Are you telling me that
there's a substitute to love?'
I asked vehemently.

'No, there isn't,'
the moon put back the flower,
'but that's the problem.
If you don't convince her with love,
convince her with your work.
Make her fall for you
like the stars fall
in that owl's eyes.'

'I will return morrow night,'
I said to the moon,
'if I carry a flower,
it's my victory.
If not, then
let me cry with you.'

I left without a response.
The moon understood my silence
like a mother understands
an infant's cry.
