I was working on the translation of a French essay when my phone rang. I picked up my phone without looking at who was calling. "Hello," I said. My focus was still on the essay.
"We picked our colors," Chet said.
I glanced at the time. It was early afternoon. Chet would just be getting done with practice. I stood up and made my way to the kitchen. "What are the colors?" I asked. It was early enough I could go dress shopping that very day. Except I didn't have a car and both Bree and Alice were currently at work. Gareth worked from home and was his own boss now. Maybe I could call him.
"Forest Green and black," he said.
"I love green," I said. "I'm wearing green. Not black." I poured myself a glass of orange juice. The orange juice was Alice's but she wouldn't mind as long as I didn't take the last of it.
"Sounds good to me," Chet said.
"And does it have to be exactly forest green or can it be like a pine or dark green?"
"I don't know specific colors like that, Kanni," he said. "Pick what you want."
I headed back to my bedroom. "And you're paying for it right?"
"Yep," he said.
"So if I go dress shopping today, I can just have the store call you for your credit card info? Will you be available? Are you doing anything tonight?"
"We don't have any plans for tonight," Chet said. "I had my proposal dinner last night. That was when we decided on the colors." I almost interrupted him then to ask why he hadn't called me last night to tell me the colors, but then thought better of it. Last night would have been a special night for the two of them even though Vincent had already proposed. They probably only thought of each other and that was the way it should have been. "I guess we should start looking at florists and photographers and stuff," he continued, "but we can do that from home. I'll be here. You can have them call me."
"Great. I might not even decide on a dress today," I said. "I'll have to try on different dresses to find the best fit for me. Sometimes I like a dress and think it will look really good on me, but when I try it on, it doesn't fit me well."
"I'm sure you'll find the perfect dress," he said.
"Does mom know the colors yet?"
"Yeah, I just called her," Chet said.
"I should call her," I said. "We could coordinate our looks. Not to look too matchy but similar."
"I'll leave that up to you guys," he said.
"Okay, I'm going to call her. Bye."
"Bye," he said.
I had a big swallow of the orange juice as I called my mom.
"Hi, Kanni," my mom answered.
"Hi. Chet just called me and told me the colors for the wedding."
"Me too," my mom said. "I didn't tell him Vincent had already told me when he got to work."
"I'm going to go look at dresses today."
"If you find one, let me know," she said. "Then I will go out and try to find one of a similar style."
"That's exactly what I was thinking," I said. "Just don't make it too matchy to mine."
"Never," my mom said.
