Vincent Kinsington
"We won," Brett Rusnak said as his little frame jumped up and down. The five year old looked at me excitedly as his twelve year old sister tried to calm him down. "We won," he yelled out again. Sara gave up trying to calm him down and their eight year old brother joined in with his cheers. Their mother just smiled as she watched them.
"We won," I called out with them which made Brett and Owen even more excited and made Sara think maybe it was okay for her to be happy that her dad's team won. Four years ago when Chet got recruited to this team, Sara had been just as excited as her younger brothers when the team won. Since she turned twelve, she thought it seemed childish to get too excited despite Mary's reassurances to her daughter that it was okay to cheer for her dad.
"You will come to my birthday party right?" Brett asked me suddenly serious.
"You just had your birthday," I said.
"I know, but next year."
So much could happen in a year. Chet could get transferred to a different team in a different state for one. That was highly unlikely though, especially since this team had just made him a designated player. They loved him. The fans loved him. I didn't think we were going to move any time soon.
"We will do everything we can to make it to your birthday party next year," I said. Brett smiled and started jumping up again celebrating the win.
"Come on, kids," Mary said. "It's late and we need to put you to bed."
"But it's a weekend," Owen protested.
"That doesn't mean you can stay up as late as you want to," Mary said. "Besides we are going to your grandma's tomorrow for dinner. I've got to admit, Vincent, that I'd rather have your mother-in-law than mine."
"Don't say that about grandma," Sara said, "and Vincent and Chet aren't married."
Mary sighed heavily. "I'm sorry I said anything about your grandma," she said. "Your grandma is a wonderful person even if she says I'm not good enough for your father because I'm smart, like to read and have a job instead of just blindly being a cheerleader."
Sara frowned at her. The boys were still too excited about the win to really listen to what Sara and Mary were saying. "Sorry," Mary said except this time she meant it. "And Chet and Vincent are practically married anyway. Now let's go." The children followed her out.
"You don't think I'm a terrible mother-in-law do you?" Nat asked from behind me.
I turned around and couldn't help but smile as I saw Nate and Nat standing there hand in hand.
"Of course not, mom," I said.
She smiled and I knew her question hadn't been a serious one. They were more my family than my own family had ever been or would ever be.
The three of us made our way out of the stadium with the throngs of people.
"You're coming over for dinner tomorrow night right?" Nat asked.
"Are you cooking?" I asked.
She swatted my arm, but it wasn't serious. She knew she was a terrible cook.
"I am," Nate said. "Pad Thai."
"We'll definitely be there."
"You wouldn't come if I was cooking?" Nat asked, feigning offense.
