"What are we doing?" Josh laughed while I crouched in front of my bedroom window that sat on the far end of the porch.
"Violet and Sam," I said simply while I pushed up hard on the window, hoping I had left it unlocked.
It slid up smoothly and I looked in, pushing my curtain to the side, before pulling my head back out. A wide and playful grin spread across my face as I turned back around to Josh.
"We're going to scare the holy shit out of them," I said in a hushed voice.
Josh smiled when he finally realized what I was up to and stepped up next to me, peering into the window.
"Oh," I said as my voice fell, "Jake needs you home though."
Josh pulled his head back out of my window and faced me, his huge smile still plastered on his face as he shook his head.
"No, Jake can wait, this'll be way too funny to miss,"
I smiled back before turning back to my window. I stepped through and onto my bed, pushing the sheer curtain to the side as Josh followed me in.
When we both had gotten onto my bed, I turned and closed the window as quietly as I could.
I looked back at Josh who was now standing on my floor and holding back a laugh.
I put my finger to my lips, silently telling him to shut up.
We made our way as slowly and quietly as we could to my door, which luckily was already slightly open.
I pushed it open slowly and we both crept into the hallway.
Light music echoed from the living room with the sounds of gentle giggling mixed in.
When we got to the end of the hall, we got as close to the wall as possible, and I peeked my head around the corner.
Violet and Sam were laying out on the couch facing one another. Violet had her back to me, and her head was propped up on the arm of the couch, her long dark hair falling over the edge.
Sam was looking at her as he laid with his head next to hers on the arm. He was facing Josh and I's direction, but he was too busy lost in his own world staring at Violet to notice us in the hall.
I then saw Sam close his eyes and lean in, kissing Violet.
I quickly turned my head back around into the hall and bent over, holding my hand over my mouth trying to keep myself from laughing as Josh took his peek around the corner as well. He turned back just as quickly as he had looked, and began laughing silently to himself as well.
When we had composed ourselves enough, I put my finger up to my smiling mouth and again, and grabbed Josh's hand, beckoning him to follow me.
We stepped slowly around the corner and kept our eyes on Violet and Sam.
The two were now in a full make-out session, and it took everything in me not to gag at the scene of my little cousin necking it on my couch.
Sam still had his eyes closed, so neither of them saw as we snuck up next to the couch in complete silence.
I finally let out a laugh as Josh broke the silence.
"What're you up to Sammy?" He vexed, laughing into his words.
The two sprung up and Violet whipped her head around to face us when she realized we were there. Josh and I stood, doubled over in laughter as the two caught their now terrified breaths.
"You bitch," Violet said, dragging out the 'bitch' as long as she could, trying to hide her very clear embarrassment.
Sam had turned a bright red and was now sitting straight up next to Violet, smiling nervously.
"Sammy, you were getting it on," Josh laughed, teasing at his clearly mortified brother.
"You can't just sneak up on someone like that," Violet said to me, clearly pissed and still embarrassed.
"Sure I can," I retorted, "when it's my house and you didn't tell me Sam would be paying a visit," I replied, still teasing her. I really didn't care if she had Sam over without telling me, this is basically her house too, but it was still fun to drag out her embarrassment.
She laughed nervously and shook her head before falling back onto the couch next to Sam.
"Well, sorry for interrupting your uh," Josh started, looking between Sam and Violet with a smirk, "whatever that was, but we gotta go, Samuel," Josh said, tapping Sam on the knee.
"Why do I have to go?" Sam asked a bit annoyed, "I have a car,"
"Yeah, but does mom know you're here?" Josh quipped, giving his little brother an 'I'm older so you have to do what I say' look.
"I mean, no," Sam replied, not moving from his spot next to Violet, "but when does she ever care when I'm gone."
"Yeah, well Jake and I need help in the garage," Josh finally said, admitting to why he was pestering Sam to leave with him.
"Hell no," Sam retorted, "I'm not moving all that shit, that was on you two,"
"It's your shit too," Josh said, grabbing out his phone, "or would you rather me tell mom where you are?"
Sam looked nervous for a split second, before rolling his eyes slightly and standing up.
"Fine."
"There ya go," Josh said with a smile, putting his arm over Sam's shoulder as all four of us made our way to the front door.
As Violet and Sam said their goodbyes, Josh turned to me and a warm smile grew across his face.
"I'll see you soon," He said in a quiet reassuring whisper.
I nodded and returned the smile, forcing it through the detested feeling that filled my mind at the thought of my day with Josh coming to an end.
As if Josh could feel exactly what I was feeling in that moment, he placed his hand over my cheek, and leaned over, meeting his lips with mine.
The kiss was slightly longer than the one we had shared in the car, but more gentle and intimate this time.
When he pulled away, he kept his head down level with mine, and he left his hand resting on the side of my face.
"I promise," he whispered, so quietly I wondered if he had said it at all, but he definitely had.
I smiled back, closing my eyes slowly and resting my head further into his hand.
"Are we going or not?" Sam asked suddenly, breaking the perfect silence.
Josh dropped his hand from my cheek and we both looked over. Violet looked at me, her mouth slightly pulling into a smirk.
"Yeah," Josh replied after a moment, shaking his head back into reality as he stepped over to the door.
Violet and I watched as the two boys made their way down the porch, waving to us one last time before getting into their respective cars and driving away.
Watching Josh's car roll down my street, illuminated in the warm-toned street lamps made my heart fall, but I kept replaying his words in my head,
'I promise'
When I finally pulled myself away from the glass and closed the door, I turned to see Violet staring at me, mouth wide open in a smile, with her hands out in front of her in a questioning gesture.
"What?" I asked, a look of confusion falling onto my face as well.
"What do you mean, 'what?'" She replied in a loud mocking tone, "did Josh not just kiss you?"
Oh yeah, I thought, realizing Violet had no idea of the events that occurred today.
I laughed nervously but ignored her question.
"Well?" She asked, eyes still wide with anticipation.
"You're going to want to sit down for this one," I replied with a laugh, prepared to tell her every flawless and brilliant; yet somewhat bewildering detail from the best day of my life.
