After five more boring classes it's finally lunch time which means this day is halfway done. I need this weekend break because school takes too much energy out of me. From the teachers to my so-called peers. I rather stick my hand in fire then be here but let me not wish that upon myself. Manifesting things like that can get you in trouble.
I walk in the cafeteria and see the table me and Vee sit at every day. It's all the way in the back and I like that it's away from everyone else. I feel bad for Vee though because I isolate her. She swears she doesn't mind but she is a big social butterfly deep down inside. She told me not to worry because apparently, I'm her only real friend that gets her. She is just trying to make me feel special.
I sit at the table and dump out my lunch. A plain turkey sandwich, chips and juice. Oh and a fruit cup. It's simple like me, I guess. I just look at my lunch with no appetite. It partly has to do with those familiar golden brown eyes that burned through me. Why am I thinking of him?
"What are you thinking about?" Vee sits down across from me. She opens her salad bowl top to consume her zero calories. I rest my head in my hand.
"Just all this homework I got." She narrows her eyes not believing a word I said. I'm an open book to her so I don't even know why I even try. She changes the subject anyway and I'm happy she didn't press for more answers.
"Levi keeps asking when he can take me on a real date. I'm running out of things to tell him." She forks a piece of her salad like its someone's face she's stabbing.
"Tell him yes and go out with him. You have been dragging this on for way too long." I smirk. I think she just likes him chasing her. It must be nice to be chased by a guy kissing the floor you walk on. The guys here would probably spit on the floor I walk on, so I can fall on my face.
"I just don't know about him yet. He takes everything I say too literally and you know me. I say what's on my mind then and there." She takes another bite.
"Well then you better do something before he falls all the way back." I open my bag of chips deciding I should eat something. If I come home with a bag full of lunch, I will never hear the end of it from my mom.
"He would be crazy if he did that. I have to sit on it and see but---" she pauses mid-sentence and her eyes get wide. She is looking dead ahead behind me. I look at her confused at what caught her attention. I follow her eyes and turn around. A guy is walking straight for our table. No one ever comes back here to bother us.
As he gets closer, I notice it's that guy I bumped into in the hallway. He must be coming to talk to Vee. That has to be the only reason. I turn around and duck my head hoping I can hide. Vee notices my reaction and looks at me.
"He's cute as hell. Do you know him?" She asks. She looks past me again and I can feel him getting closer to us. This is a nightmare; someone please wake me up.
"No, I don't." I lie covering my face so I can be unseen.
"He's coming." She whispers with a smile. She is enjoying this too much.
"Hey." A deep voice says behind me. I can feel my body temperature reach the highest peak. I try sliding into my seat hoping I sink through the floor. I close my eyes and imagine I'm somewhere else.
"Hey there stranger. You're cute. What's your name?" Vee asks him. I peek up at her and shake my head hoping she stops talking. Of course, no one can come between Vee and a cute boy speaking to her.
"I'm Pierce. And yours?"
"I'm Phina's best friend Vee. You must have come for her I'm guessing. You can sit down if you want." She nods to the empty seat right next to me.
