Marley watched as her phone continued to light up with messages from the group chat, alone in a house meant for two. She had always been taught that you're not meant to feel like a stranger in your own home, but as the minutes ticked by on the days that seemed to never end, yet simultaneously end in the blink of an eye, the feeling began to become more and more familiar. Every inch of the house was filled with memories of the best four years of her life. Every room had a trace of him that lingered, because technically it was still his house too.

But Karl wasn't gone. Not really.

In fact, he was staying with one of his friends after he had finally convinced her to leave her coworkers couch. He wasn't gone. He wasn't even five minutes away.

And yet the grief she felt was almost strong enough to convince herself that he was. Marley didn't even know it was possible to grieve someone who's heart hadn't yet stopped beating, but as she sat there wearing his sweater that was starting to lose his scent, she mourned.

She mourned the relationship she had been so sure would last a lifetime and longer and she mourned the piece of her heart that was lost, left on the beach the night everything went wrong.

He wasn't dead. But the longer she sat there, all alone, she briefly wondered if a part of her was.

A bigger, more rational part of her knew for a fact that this was for the best and she was being silly. In fact, Marley was the one who finalized the break, so really there was no reason to feel like she was rotting on the inside. There was no reason for her to feel like she was being suffocated in the home they bought together, claustrophobia eating her alive as she wondered how everything went so wrong so quickly.

But she did. And there was nothing she could do about it because Karl was gone, but not really.

As Marley watched her friends finally start to notice that she had stopped replying ( she now had ten missed calls from Nick and Tina combined ), she wondered if this was worse than the heartbreak of an actual break up, rather than the "break" he had pleaded for instead.

Because with a break, she couldn't move on, she couldn't try and heal. Not with the promise of maybe lingering in the air. Maybe they'll fix their relationship, maybe they'll get back together, maybe they'll realize that they're better of without each other.

The maybes hurt almost as much as the goodbyes.

Her phone buzzed again, Tina's smiling face quickly taking up the entirety of the screen. But before Marley could even answer ( who was she kidding? She didn't even reach for the phone ), she received a message from the shorter girl instead, stating that she had already bought a plane ticket and would be there sometime tomorrow.

And despite how grateful she was for her best friend, Marley couldn't even bring herself to answer. She could barely even look at her phone. Not when a happy couple with stars in their eyes and no resentment in their hearts would stare back at her.
