TWENTY TWO ;
lonelyreal life !
Marley hadn't realized how busy Alex had been keeping her until a few hours after he had gone to the airport. He had dragged her out of the house almost every day since he had started staying with her, and continued to do so up until the very last second. Alex had insisted on one last adventure before he went home that morning, so around three am he tossed a jacket on her face and impatiently waited for her to come outside.
They hadn't done anything more than wander around the neighborhood in the light rain. Alex had attempted to steer them away from the house Karl had been staying in until Marley quietly reminded him that it was unnecessary considering he had been in California for a few days already.
But he was on his way home now, and Marley hadn't realized just how lonely she was until now. Since the break she had always had someone around. First, it was Tina. She hadn't gone home for very long before she was back on Marleys porch, a big smile on her face and suitcases in hand. Shortly after that, Alex had shown up. He was loud and clearly just as upset about her and Karl's break as she was.
But he was also a great distraction. He had refused to let he wallow in her sadness all while claiming that he definitely wasn't playing favorites while they were in their divorce arc.
And now he was on his way home and Marley didn't have anyone to distract her anymore. It was just her and Goose, who was the real child of divorce, in an empty house.
Marley was lonely, plain and simple. But she was also stuck with a persistent feeling of deja vu that she couldn't seem to shake.
The situation she was in was one she should already be used to by now. While they were still together, Karl had to travel a lot for work. Since the break, she would spend the nights where she couldn't sleep curled up on his side of the bed and wonder if it was one of the reasons they had started to grow distant.
If it was, it didn't matter now. The damage had already been done and there was no use in dwelling on the past. Especially when the present already had enough problems for her to deal with.
And at least then, Marley always knew he would be coming back home. He had tried to call and text her as much he could while he was away, and that fact remained partially true this time as well. Although, this time it was just her sending him pictures of Goose and him saying how much he missed the both of them. But that was it. There were no reassurances that he would be coming home this time, because to be completely honest, neither of them knew how that conversation was going to go when he came back to North Carolina.
Best case scenario, things could end up being okay and he would come back home. She knew it would take a while for things to go back to normal, but he would be back and they would be together again.
But that was being hopeful and crossing both fingers that things would go well. There was always the chance that things would end up being worse than they were now. The break could turn into them officially splitting up, leaving each other to learn how to deal with the silence that came with losing a part of your own soul. There was nobody in the world who made her happier than Karl did and she was desperately hoping things went well when he came back.
Looking around at the house they had bought together, Marley nervously wondered if she would ever learn to deal with the silence if things ended badly between the two of them.
