real life !

"He's gonna make a great father one day," Marleys mother noted as they watched Karl play barbie's on the floor with Lanie. "They adore him."

Marley wrinkled her nose, "We already have a son, mom. Don't invalidate our kids existence."

"I love Goose, don't even start," she replied with an exasperated shake of her head. "I'm just saying—,"

"I know what you're saying, mama," Marley quickly interrupted, "But it feels like you're trying to rush us into things when we're just now starting to be okay again."

She sighed and glanced over at her daughter, "I wasn't saying anytime soon. I don't need to rush anything when i'm confident you two will be together for the rest of your lives."

"Don't jinx us," Mars muttered, before looking around the living room. "Where are the boys?"

"Your subject changing skills need improvement, Marley," the older woman said with a laugh. "But fine, i'll drop it for now. Last I checked they were moping in their room because they don't like the fact that it isn't their birthday."

Marley sighed and pushed herself up from the couch, "Okay, well i'm gonna go and make sure one of them didn't get thrown out the window or something. Last time I was here Luca mentioned something about getting rid of the weakest twin so I feel like it's fair to be concerned."

Once she eventually made it to their room, she nearly regretted coming up to check on them. The second she turned on the lights she was immediately shot by a ridiculous amount of nerf darts that seemed to be never ending. After what felt like an eternity, it finally stopped, leaving two cackling little boys and one very exasperated Marley.

"That felt targeted," she finally said after the boys had finally calmed down.

Luca grinned up at her in all his toothless glory, "I hoped it was you. Kai wanted it to be Lanie but last time mom was so mad and we got grounded."

"Moms not gonna be mad that you attacked me?"

Kai waved her off, "Nope! You're old."

"Thanks. I came up here because mom said you two were sad and I wanted to check on you guys but you decided to shoot me? The nerve."

"Are you trying to gaslight us?" Luca asked with wide eyes. "I'm telling!"

Marley stifled a laugh at how concerned they both looked, "How do you even know what that is?"

"Karl taught us."

"Oh?" Marley asked, raising her eyebrows at the twins who were both grinning now. "What else did he teach you?"

Luca went to respond but was quickly cut off by Kai slapping a hand over his mouth and shooting him the nastiest glare he could. "We worn sword to secretary."

"Secrecy," Karl corrected as he made his way into the room. "You weren't supposed to tell her that, though."

Ignoring what he said, the boys instead chose to cross their arms and glare at Karl, who had Lanie standing behind him and hugging his leg.

"Why is she with you?" Kai asked before turning to glare at his sister. "You know she's old now, right? She doesn't need to be babied anymore."

Lanie stuck her tongue out at them and held onto Karl tighter. "You're just mad because he loves me more than both of you."

"No. We're mad because you're gaslighting Karl."

The younger girl rolled her eyes at them and shook her head, "You guys are stupid."

Marley tried her hardest not to laugh at the varying levels of surprise on everyone, except for her little sisters face. The twins looked like they were seconds away from launching themselves at the younger girl, while Karl just looked completely bewildered.

"Another thing you taught them, Karl?" Marley asked with a teasing smile. "I didn't realize you were such a bad influence."

"I'm not! That has nothing to do with me!" he exclaimed, pointing towards the grinning five year old. "She's framing me!"

Luca shot Karl an extremely disappointed look as he hooked arms with his brother, "It had to be you that taught her that word, you traitor. You thought it would be funny and now we're telling mom on you."

"Ooooo, you're in trouble," Marley said, grinning at the way Karl's face paled. "Why do you look like you just got caught committing a crime or something? I don't think she'll really care—,"

"Oh, she will," Kai promised, sounding dead serious. "She's going to kick you out of the family for teaching Lanie how to curse."

Before Karl could say anything, the twins booked it down the hallways shouting to their mother about how Karl made the birthday girl call them the s word.

"Stop laughing at me," Karl finally said after Lanie made her way towards the kitchen to watch the chaos. "It's not funny."

"It's actually hilarious," Marley replied as she slotted herself against his side. "I can't believe you made her say the worst curse word there is."

He rolled his eyes as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders, "Imagine if she just started making dolphin noises like that one spongebob episode."

"My mom would definitely kick you out of the family for that one," she said with an exaggerated sigh. "She'd probably ban me from ever seeing you again, too. Man, this is terrible."

"I hate you," he muttered with an exasperated roll of his eyes. "You're stressing me out for no reason."

Marley glanced up at him with a frown, "No reason? You've corrupted her five year old, Karl. How is she ever going to forgive you for teaching her the word stupid?"

"You just said it!" Karl said with a dramatic gasp. "Maybe if I tell on you she'll forget about the fact that your evil little sister framed me."

"As if that would ever work—,"

She was interrupted by a throat clearing behind them, startling both of them. When she looked up, she was met with her mother, who looked extremely amused, and her little sister who looked far too smug. "What's this I hear about you teaching your sister bad words?"
