A/N: If you're reading this that means you continued on with my story which means a lot so thanks!
As Uncle Kurt and I continued down the muddy Oregon road away from my house, we stopped by a McDonald's and he bought me an Oreo McFlurry. Every time Uncle Kurt is driving me, he always buys me one. As I was savoring my McFlurry, I suddenly said,"Uncle Kurt, why do you want to send me away?" I suddenly felt angry. "You just want to get rid of me because I'm an Anomaly and I'm worthless and sending me away would be one less problem for you and my parents!" "Aspen! What are you talking about?! Your parents and I love you very much and we only want what's best for you pumpkin. You think I would be driving you all the way to the airport to get rid of you? That's blasphemy!" Uncle Kurt exclaimed. We rode the rest of the way in silence.
When we arrived at the airport, Uncle Kurt told me to wear his baseball cap and sunglasses so my eyes would stay as hidden as possible. Unfortunately, when we got to the security check, they made me take off my hat and sunglasses. I tried to avert my eyes as much as possible, but the security guard saw them. He gasped in astonishment realizing what it was. What I was. Then he leaned over and whispered,"It's okay. Are you headed to Hippoplum?" I nodded. "My daughter is in her third year. Her name is Lynn. If you see her tell her that her old man misses her, would you?" I nodded again.
Uncle Kurt hurried me toward Gate 46, the flight to Sacramento,California where Hippoplum is located. "Well Aspen, I guess this is where we part ways. About what happened in the car. I don't want you to ever think we want to get rid of you. We just want you to be safe and you're definitely not worthless. I always want us to be on good terms. Okay?" he asked. "Okay," I said. He gave me a big hug and said,"Good luck at Hippoplum." We both laughed at the ridiculousness of the name. As I entered the plane, I waved back at Uncle Kurt. My heart was pounding outside of my chest. I don't even know what to do.
I sat down on the plane next to a boy who looked about my age. When I sat down, he didn't look up. His bangs were covering his eyes, so I couldn't see his face. Oh my god. Is she still staring at me? I gasped. What was that? I swear I heard a voice in my head. The boy's head shot up, but he quickly put it back down, but not fast enough for me to see the color of his eyes. Purple.
"You're an Anomaly," I whispered.
"I - I don't know what you're talking about," he stuttered.
"Yes you do."
"No I don't!"
"It's okay to admit it. I would know because I'm an Anomaly too." At that, he looked up. I took off my sunglasses to prove the point. He gasped. I quickly put them back on and looked around to make sure nobody had noticed. "Are you going to Hippoplum too?" I asked. He nodded slowly.
"I'm really nervous. I've never been anywhere without my parents before. Or anywhere, period." he said. I nodded in agreement.
"So uh what was that weird mind thing that just happened?" I asked.
"I have no idea. Do you think it has something to do with being Anomalys?"
"Probably. I guess we'll find out when we get to Hippoplum." A long silence passed before he spoke again.
"Have you recieved your Gift? I have. I can speak to animals. I only turned thirteen last month, but since then I have developed a much better relationship with my hamster. I'll miss Mildred." I laughed.
"I haven't recieved my Gift yet. I turned thirteen today actually."
"Oh really," he grinned,"Well happy birthday. I would've gotten you a present but I only met you five minutes ago sorry. In fact, I don't even know your name. Mine is Hunter."
"I'm Aspen."
"Like a tree."
"Yeah I guess."
Hunter started reading a book, so I decided to write in my journal.
August 23
I've survived another year undiscovered. Uncle Kurt convinced Mom and Dad to send me off to some school called Hippoplum. It's the stupidest name I've ever heard of. Right now I'm on a plane and I'm sitting next to another Anomaly named Hunter. Earlier we had this weird mind connection thing. I don't know what it was. He's going to Hippoplum also. I haven't recieved my Gift yet. I have to admit I'm pretty curious on what it will be. Hunter's is being able to speak to animals which is pretty cool-
"I know it's cool." Hunter said. My face burned red.
"Why were you being so nosy?!" I exclaimed.
"Why were you thinking so loud?" he said as he tapped his head,"Remember. Weird mind connection thing." I gave up on my journal and just closed my eyes. Just as I was drifting off, I heard the pilot:
"This is your pilot speaking. We will be landing in two hours."
A/N: I know this was another short chapter but I'm still new to this, but I hope you liked it!
